whitesoxjr27
Listen, we know it’s tough to catch up on everything happening in the baseball world each morning. There are all kinds of stories, rumors, game coverage, and Vines of dudes getting hit in the beans every day. Trying to find all of it while on your way to work or sitting at your desk just isn’t easy. It’s okay, though, we’re going to do the heavy lifting for you each morning, and find the things you need to see from within the SB Nation baseball network as well as from elsewhere. Please hold your applause until the end, or at least until after you subscribe to the newsletter. * * * Well, it certainly is an unorthodox strategy. On the heels of Kris Bryant's Rookie of the Year Award and Joe Maddon's Manager of the Year Award, the Cubs are looking to attract big-name free agents to pad their roster for another postseason run in 2016. Rather than downplaying a century of bad luck, however, Maddon believes that the lack of championships will only enhance his sales pitch. According to the Cubs' skipper, many players would jump at the chance to make history with the team. http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/2015/11/18/975...ddon-free-agent
OmarComing25
I mean, it's honestly not a bad sales pitch.

Panerista
Players know that to win a World Series on the North Side would buy them instant legend status. The questions is, do they care?
Dick Allen
I wonder why that strategy hasn't worked the last 20 or 30 years. Players follow the money.
juddling
That is something I always figured when it came to someone taking the manager job. Sure, you may fade away like so many in the past but if you happen to be at the helm if/when they win the series you will be god-like revered for the rest of time. ChiliIrishHammock24
I think it's a good strategy. I bet a lot of players who have money already, would, all other things being equal, would think it would be cool to be a hero of a franchise for many many many years. It is a good strategy considering they have not won a WS in over 100 years and made it to the NLCS last season. Will the strategy work? Who knows but we'll have a better idea by the end of February. Any free agents that sign with the Cubs are likely to have taken the highest offer. Edited November 24, 2015 by OmarComing25
Jose Abreu
This sure worked on David Price! He wanted nothing more but to come bring a championship to the North Side! Money was not a factor at all!

According to reports, the cubs didn't make an offer to Price and have been saying they are looking for a second tier pitcher because they only have about 20M to spend. I thought they had 30-35M to spend, they need a CF and a SP, 20 won't get you both in today's market. Second tier SPs are still going to get at least 15M/year, and a decent outfielder will probably approach that as well. That could change but its been reported over the last few weeks they are currently sitting at about 110M and expect to end up around 130-140M. Here's a link explaining more. Sounds as though the cubs really never considered Price much of a possibility. http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-den/2015/11...add-to-payroll/

He also didn't have a drat pick attached entering the offseason when everyone thought the Cubs were going to spend but they decided not to. (I think they've got the money to pull it off but also have a few holes that needed to be filled with it).

I bet the Cubs trade Soler for a young pitcher, sign Alex Gordon or Span or a different OF, and bring back Samardzija.
