CaliSoxFanViaSWside
QUOTE (bruni @ Dec 1, 2015 -> 05:48 AM) The real shame is that our asleep at the wheel front office failed to anticipate the release of Valencia from the Blue Jays last summer. He would have been a serviceable stop gap for 2 years until Michalczewski was ready (assuming he realizes his potential - eye roll, I know). Instead we will likely overpay for Lawrie or spend our limited budget on Freese. Either way, this team continues to tread water and get lapped by others in its own division, while wasting it's few upper tier talents. You might also conclude that the Jays would have realized he had value and tried to trade him instead to desperately seeking third baseman teams like the Sox instead of just giving him away. Not sure when they DFA'd him, August 1st ? Anyway probably right after the trade deadline so maybe Toronto pretty much had to DFA him since the trade deadline had passed. The jays were pretty buy getting players and maybe they just didn't have time to trade him after acquiring Tulo, Price, Revere .Revere was the last one picked up on 7/31 . He's saying the Sox should have got him before he was put on waivers anticipating that the Jays had no room for him after their flurry of trade activity at last years deadline. The WSox front office should have been aware of the pending release - the Blue Jays got zip for releasing him. Certainly they would have been pleased to add our 30th best prospect for him or something of that nature. Instead we will need to pay plenty for Freese, take a chance on a Korean player or trade multiple prospects for Lawrie. Seems like a cheaper, more effective alternative was out there last summer but we missed it.
Saufley
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Nov 30, 2015 -> 09:16 PM) I really don't think the Sox will sign Upton. Too costly in salary for what the Sox have to spend. Maybe I've just got my hopes up but a trade for Lawrie just sounds like a move the Sox would make. I mean that in a good way. If Lawrie can add some good defense maybe it makes sense. I too don't see the Sox spending a lot to get a big bat. With our good starting pitching the defense on the field needs to be a big upgrade. Try to win those 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 games.

Not sure what happened to Lawrie in '15 but his defense was average or better before that and since he's just shy of 26 I see no reason why he cannot get back to playing solid defense. I agree about upgrading the defense on the field. It's why I'm fine with giving Sanchez 2B and see if his bat comes around. Same with Saladino at SS if the Sox are unable to find a fit for that position. If the Sox end up going with Lawrie, Saladino and Sanchez it would leave funds available for the Sox to trade for an impact outfield bat (CarGo) that has a higher salary. I know Saladino and Sanchez aren't good hitters but its possible they can make up for that with their defense which would be pretty damn good up the middle of the infield. As bad as the Sox need offense, I'm pretty much thinking to upgrading the defense first and foremost because of the pitching staff.

The Blue Jays traded for Ben Revere on July 31st. To make room for him, they had to DFA Valencia. They DFA'd Valencia in August. Even if the White Sox wanted him (they put in a claim by the way), the Oakland A's had priority as the AL team with the worst record. Valencia wasn't available prior to the deadline. They just ran out of roster spots. For the Sox to trade for him, he would have had to clear waivers or at least make it to the Sox for them to be awarded the claim. The Sox pitching staff put up a 3.98 era good for 14 in baseball. The Sox offense put up 622 runs which is 28 in baseball. That's 3.84 runs per game which is less the what the pitching staff have up. Given that 3B was a black hole for the White Sox, they should have been on the phone with every team with a possible 3B solution for them at the trade deadline, including Toronto with whom they are familiar from past dealings. Believe me, had they been in real time communication with Toronto on the 31st, they could have made a trade that day with Toronto as Toronto was acquiring Revere. I am sure that he could have been snagged as a same day follow up to the Revere trade. Believe me, Toronto knew good and well that acquiring Revere would require them to dump Valencia and they would have gladly received something vs. nothing. Not hard to make it work if the Sox brass were being proactive-not reactive.

They wanted to keep Valencia but they couldn't make it work with how their roster was structured. I know you just want this to be the Sox fault though so I'll stop here. The White Sox aren't the only team looking for a third baseman. It looks like a lot of teams missed out on the Messiah, Danny Valencia. I hear ya and agree. I can live with Saladino/Sanchez up the middle for one season to see if their bats come around but my preference would be to get a SS, play Sanchez at 2B and use Saladino as the utility/platoon type. Problem with that is short stops are about as hard to come by as third baseman. One idea could be to sign Freese to play 3B, trade for Lawrie to play 2B, start Saladino at SS and use Sanchez as the utility. I still prefer Saladino as the utility due to his defensive versatility. The have their work cut out for them this off season.

BlackSox13
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Dec 1, 2015 -> 12:15 PM) If this happened, I'd like to see Sanchez and Saladino flip flop their roles on the team. I don't know how good of a shortstop Sanchez would be at the MLB level, but he's younger than Saladino and has more upside IMO. According to this quote from an August '14 Daily Herald article, Sanchez can play SS. "I am an natural second baseman, but I can play shortstop as well," Sanchez said. "Obviously, I feel more comfortable at second base only because I have played more at second base. But I also feel comfortable at shortstop." I think Saladino has the better arm for SS and Sanchez's bat would play up better at 2B. Sanchez looks right at home at 2B but in the event the Sox picked up a 3B and 2B, I won't complain if Sanchez went to SS. I agree that Sanchez has more upside and I refuse to give up on a 23 year old switch hitter that has a very good glove, range and runs the bases well. Just need his bat to come along some more and he'll be a starter for years to come.
Whisox05
I'm starting to think that if saladino or sanchez start they will be on short leashes offensively. Started going over the overall team per position stats and it's pretty sad. The collective of all the guys who played 2nd for the Sox posted a .217 average, and .266 obp both dead last in all of baseball. Just throwing this out there sanchez started 112 games as second which he played 69% of the games for the Sox at 2nd. He hit only .007 better then team average and .002 better obp. Are talking about the 2nd baseman that helped have the Sox worst offense at that position in all of baseball last year. A .300 obp would be .032 points higher then what sanchez put up last season and in his career sofar at the majors. Even when sanchez hit .250 in 2014 he only put up a .269 obp. Sox desperately need more offense which is what Hahn has been saying this offseason Edited December 4, 2015 by WhiteSoxLifer
