Dunt
Anyone else thinking this could be a good fit? Positives -No QO attached -Another high OBP bat at the top of order, allows Abreu to hit 3 -3 of last 4 seasons have been 3+ WAR -Length and terms of contract wont be too bad -Doesnt strike out a lot Negatives -Hip injury last season -Poor DRS numbers in CF last season (could be b/c of injury) -Sox would need to be creative about OF positions -Poor power OF, so would need to find more SLG from infield
Jose Abreu
Now that Eaton is becoming more of a power hitter, I wouldn't mind him being shifted to #2 and Melky down in the 5-6 range. The issue, as you pointed out, is where he'd play among the Melky/Eaton/Thompson/Garcia shuffle with Shuck as a backup.

I think you set up a rotating basis where Eaton is in LF full time and then Span/Thompson are in CF, Thompson/Cabrera are in RF, and Thompson/Cabrera/LaRoche cycle around at DH. TheFutureIsNear
Ehh...I mean if he's a final piece type of guy after acquiring bigger pieces, sure I'd take him. I'm just really afraid of the FO signing Span and Freese and trying it again with more or less the same roster. To me that's worst case scenario. The defense and hitting on the roster is broken and needs to be fixed. Band aids won't do the trick.

I think he goes to the Cubs to fill 2 spots for them: leadoff and CF

I agree with this, if he is not the final piece of the puzzle (which he definitely isn't given where things stand) he may improve us a little bit to the point where we are drafting 12th next year instead of 10. If we are going to be bad, we need to be really bad to get impact talent into the system. If we are going to be good, then go get Longoria and sign a defensive first SS and Span. I don't see all of that happening, so I would be reluctant to take him on given his age.

Chisoxfn
I must say, I've always liked Span and feel we've lacked the type of player Span personifies. That said, he's got serious hip issues and I'd be concerned going long-term on him. However, if you could get him on a shorter-term deal, I'd be intrigued. Bigsoxhurt35
Not sure due to age and health but this team could use defense and more speed.
