Very sad. Bury your head in the sand if you think America is safe. You are in danger at work, at church, at the movies, at sporting events, walking down the street, sitting in your living room or on the porch. Better learn how to duck, as bullets might be coming at any time. Very very sad.

What is the speculation on the motivation of this one? Its not ISIS or anything right?

Right now the speculation seems to be that one of them was an ex employee there or somehow knew some of the people there.

As someone with a FOID card I honestly don't understand the need to even manufacture automatic assault rifles. They aren't for hunting or personal protection.

Has there been any official statement as to what the guns were? All I have seen is 'long guns'. if you rely on witness descriptions, a single shot .22 can be an 'assault weapon'. And if they WERE automatic weapons, 99.9% chance he didn't acquire them legally, as they are almost impossible to get in the US.

These weren't automatic. Automatic = able to fire many bullets with a single pull of the trigger.

Sorry, Assault rifles in general. Semi-Auto assault rifles are pretty easily converted to fully auto though. I just dont understand their place in the world outside of the military.

Several reports have said the couple returned with "tactical gear and assault rifles." Both of which I dont understand their place in society. Home protection and hunting would be the last places for an assault rifle.

I suspect people still use them for hunting, but it's mostly for sport. I'm not a fan, and wouldn't have a problem with a ban on these weapons or at least a really stringent selection process, but I also don't see any difference between these assault weapons and really fancy sports cars. Both serve no real useful purpose, they're for hobbyists, and they both lead to unnecessary death. One to a larger degree than others, obviously.

Muslim, new Saudi Arabian bride partner, the weapons/gear... this wasn't your run of the mill "gone postal" shooting. Odd though that if it was pre-planned that he would still go to the office party in the morning.

Sure maybe, except really good sport hunters tend to use single shot high powered rifles rather than AR-15's with massive clips. By definition very good hunters wont need to repeatedly pull the trigger and a relatively closer range than rifles.

They are completely stupid in home defense. You want to limit the ability of bullets to break through drywall into other rooms. The largest gun you would need at home is a shotgun full of buckshot.

I don't know a lot about them, but I do know those guns are highly customizable. I doubt hunters use them as machine guns to take down a deer or whatever.

I'm with you on home defense. Maybe the theory is if an intruder sees that kind of gun they'd be scared off more than with a shotgun? I dunno. You'd certainly get more shots with that rifle over a shotgun though.
