There is a line in the trailer (which was NOT in the movie) where Luke says, "The force is strong in my family. My father had it. I have it. My sister has it. You have that power too."

The only thing I can figure is that this is a line from the beginning of Episode 8 spoken by Luke to Rey. Either that or there's a new character we haven't seen yet.

I definitely missed this. Wouldn't this have received more attention if so?

That's right. I forgot about that from the trailer, curiouser and curiouser.

Most definitely Luke speaking, and the line was most definitely not in the movie.

That's why I was shocked there wasn't another 5 minutes at the end of the movie because I was certain this line was coming.

Although he says "My father HAS it..."

His father is dead.

Yeah, he did say "has" and not "had". That was my poor memory before watching it again. Still, we know that dead Jedi can interact with the living in spirit, so I wouldn't read too much into that. It's definitely Luke's voice.

I'm pretty sure that was dialogue pulled from Luke speaking to Leia in Jedi, re-purposed to fit the trailer.

Didn't they use that line from Return of the Jedi?

Yes, but in Return of the Jedi, I believe Luke says "My father HAD it."

Edit: Yeah, I was mistaken. Vader was still alive when he said this to Leia. He did say has, not had.

The line isn't exactly the same. Even so, they are implying that there is another member of the family. It wouldn't make sense for Luke to be saying this to Kylo Ren, since he already knows both that he has force powers and is related.

You're wrong, Leia. You have that power too. In time you'll learn to use it as I have. The Force runs strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. And... my sister has it. Yes. It's you, Leia.

That's the exact line in ROTJ. So, yeah, if they actually cut up the line and rearranged it, it could have been the same, but I think this was a new line that was either always intended for Episode 8 or originally in Episode 7 and then later cut.

In the trailer, the light saber is getting handed to Rey right as Luke's voice is saying "You have that power too." If she really isn't related then that's terribly misleading.

There's no reason to rule out Kylo Ren, it could have been said when he was training him.

I'm a bit bothered by use of my family, instead of our family. If he was talking to Rey as a family member, he wouldn't use my family, thus excluding her.

The most likely scenario is we're all reading way too much into this. That was a teaser trailer that was designed to excite fans about the upcoming movie and get them thinking about what could happen. It clearly succeeded.

It didn't stop him from using it in Return of the Jedi.

If he was basically breaking the news to her that she is his daughter, or niece or whatever, he might still use that phrase.

I just read a theory that goes on about how she is Obi-Wan Kenobi's granddaughter.

Not really sure where they are going with it, but I would be shocked if she is just some random person.

She can't be a random person. How else would she have the force innately?

How did Obi-Wan have it? Who was Anakin's father? There were hundreds of Jedi's in the prequels.

She doesn't HAVE to be a Solo/Skywalker.

Obi-Wan's story is unknown. Anakin was conceived by Darth Plagueis' manipulation of midichlorians to create a powerful Sith leader.

That's never really been considered cannon by the Star Wars universe, as far as I can tell. (God, this is nerdiest conversation ever, haha).

Either way, it goes back to the point that Rey doesn't have to come from a lineage we already know. I do like this theory overall on Rey (from Reddit):

Rey was a young force user training under Luke at the time of Kylo Ren's massacre.

She is the only survivor other than Luke.

Luke decides to hide her away from Kylo (similar to how Luke was hidden away)

Luke hides her on Jakku, a desolate planet devoid of life and the force. (thus making it hard for Kylo or Snoke to find her, and potentially preventing her from using the force)

Luke gives the old man part of the map to find him, and tells him to look after her.

Luke gives the rest of the map to R2, and tells him to turn on only when Rey comes in vicinity of him.

Once Rey leaves Jakku, her force powers awaken, and Kylo and Snoke feel it.

It makes sense to me. Who her parents are, we can't really tell one way or the other.

I'd guess Anakin's origin is canon since it's from the films.

I don't know IF Luke is Rey's father, but it's pretty clear that she was trained, had her mind erased and was stashed on Jakku while Max Van Sydow's character watched over her. Luke probably dropped her off, gave him the map and told them to wait for an "awakening."

Also, I'm gonna guess she was the only padwan that survived when the Knights of Ren attacked Luke's Academy. I'm praying that Snoke and the Knights of Ren are dark side users from the outer rim and aren't Sith.

I can't remember if it was in the movie but in the book, Kylo Ren says " it iS you" when the saber flies into her hand instead of his. So she is an important part of his past or he knows of her.

I don't know about the brainwashing aspect, but I don't reject the idea that Rey is a Skywalker or a Solo (IMHO, likely a Skywalker). She is different from Luke for sure. She's significantly less headstrong and overdetermined relative to Luke in IV. For this reason, I don't mind that Rey learned quickly.

She would be a Skywalker either way ;)

Sure, but it more affects the relationship with Ren.

Of course, I'm just joking around.

Has anyone addressed the strange dust/rocks/coal that Ren put his helmet in when he was interrogating Rey? I read something that theorized it has something to do with Vaders funeral pyre

I noticed that the second time through. Kind of a "rise from the ashes of his grandfather" vibe. It's a kind of messed up theory, but it makes sense.

While I don't necessarily think it's true, I would love it if Snoke turned out to be Darth Plageius.

The evidence in favor

  • While Palpatine makes it clear Sidious murdered Plagueis, he admits Plagueis could prevent people from dying
  • the music played over the Snoke scenes in The Force Awakens is the same as the music played when Palpatine tells Plagueis' story in Episode III

Only time will tell, but Snoke's identity is critical to the story of the new trilogy.
