Harry Chappas
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 4, 2015 -> 04:41 PM) David KaplanVerified account @thekapman That lines up with what my source told me earlier this afternoon that Lackey wanted to be here with Lester, Ross and Theo. Amazing how the media kisses Theo's ass Lines up with the fact nobody was parting with $32M for him...somehow with the cub defense and his age, I don't see this move working out really well. Media will spin it as something greater than what it is.
fathom
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Dec 4, 2015 -> 10:44 PM) As long as he's nowhere close to a White Sox uniform when the season starts and dominates the Cubs on whatever team he signs with, I'll be happy. Happy that Samardzija's not going to the Cubs, as that would have really been annoying if he went back there and pitched well.

shipps
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Dec 4, 2015 -> 04:38 PM) The draft pick for a 37 year old is something that would have turned me off as well. I hear you guys but the Cubs believe they are going for it next year. They have to be willing to do some NOW deals if they want to get to that ultimate goal right away. Harry Chappas
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 4, 2015 -> 04:43 PM) Seen a few places the Cardinals might go after Samardzija now Makes a lot of sense and I would love it if it worked out.

They have to be willing to do some NOW deals if they want to get to that ultimate goal right away. Also true. Not to mention that they have all these position players locked up for 8 million years that I'm sure in their minds they can lose one pick and be ok. YouCanPutItOnTheBoardYES!
I just hope that the Cubs keeping losing in the next few years when their core is young and cheap. They'll be f***ed when Lester is at the end of his deal, Arrieta is expensive, and all their young guys are older and more expensive. Harry Chappas
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Dec 4, 2015 -> 04:47 PM) And if I was a Cubs fan, I'd be fully on board with that. It's time. I think everyone agrees on this but I am not certain this move makes them all that much better if this is their added arm.
Bob Sacamano
Yeah the system is deep enough. They can spare a draft pick this year.

Friend of Nordhagen
Wasn't one of Theo's huge mistakes in Boston, at least considered so at the time, signing Lackey to a huge contract and then having him completely suck? (Then Lackey was good after Theo left, if I remember correctly.)
fathom
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 4, 2015 -> 11:50 PM) Don't think they're done personally. Theo today said they'd sign a FA pitcher and trade for one
Y2Jimmy0
Lackey is 37 but he did put up a 3.6 fWAR last year. I think he'll end up being their #4 starter. That's solid.
Friend of Nordhagen
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 4, 2015 -> 05:53 PM) Lackey is 37 but he did put up a 3.6 fWAR last year. I think he'll end up being their #4 starter. That's solid. Especially with Greinke and Price as the 2 and 3. Wait. You're telling me that didn't happen? Someone tell Maddon that he's not quite the draw that his enormous ego no doubt thinks he is.
YouCanPutItOnTheBoardYES!
This is my favorite quote that I've seen so far regarding the Lackey signing. Maybe the Cubs even get by the Mets if they had him last year. Good signing.
fathom
Lackey can play LF?
Friend of Nordhagen
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 4, 2015 -> 05:58 PM) Lackey can play LF? Sure. He's like a faster, more svelte Schwarber who doesn't belly-flop singles into triples while being widely considered "not that bad out there." BlackSox13
Not a horrible deal seeing as how its only for two years but giving up a comp pick to their division rivals is what cracks me up. Two years of Lackey buys them time to develop his replacement I suppose.
Baron
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 4, 2015 -> 04:43 PM) Please let this mean Ross is his personal catcher also! He's the opposing teams favorite catcher. He's just awful at this stage. I think this is a decent signing even with the draft pick although that does dull it down a bit. So basically what we should probably want is Shark not to sign there right? Because we'll get their second round pick now.

Because we'll get their second round pick now. That's not how it works any more. The Cubs would lose their 2nd round pick but the White Sox would still be in the compensatory round between 1 and 2. This deal could well make more sense if it's not the only QO'd FA they sign, where they're losing a couple picks and saying heck with it. shipps
If they can sign Gordon and then swing a trade for a Shelby Miller I thinks thats one hell of an off season for them.

I dont see why they shouldnt just try and load up a few of those free agents at this point. Probably should bring Fowler back.

I dont see why they shouldnt just try and load up a few of those free agents at this point. Probably should bring Fowler back. FWIW, this deal puts the Cubs close to $140m in commits next year. The highest opening day payroll they've had on record was $146m, back in 2010. With the stadium renovations/extra advertising and a big boost in shared revenues since then, plus a packed ballpark and some ticket price gradual increases, they probably still have substantial room to add next year. I'm assuming they are still having some dialogue with Shark and Jason Heyward. Not sure they can sign both but I dont expect them to be out of the loop on those guys.
