southsider2k5
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 10, 2015 -> 11:25 AM) As I've said the last few days I'm not a big Lawrie fan but he's much better than anything we had and we gave up nothing so I'm definitely happy about the trade. That said, I don't expect him to make a jump or "figure it out" here, that doesn't happen with us and hitters, he is what he is. This is the key. We go from having "terrible" at 3B, to "respectable". That is a nice gain, and instantly makes us a better team.
SCCWS
QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Dec 10, 2015 -> 09:40 AM) Lawrie's K% is 18.6% for his career, that is below the major league average. Also, his 1.8 WAR projection would mean a 3 WAR improvement over what we got from 3B in 2015. But his K% was 26% last season. He had 144 K and 146 hits in 562 AB. As I said very similiar to Avi at 553 AB, 141 K hits and 142 hits.
southsider2k5
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 10, 2015 -> 12:04 PM) Like when they benched him this summer? Being upset at being benched is having an attitude problem? I don't agree with that at all. Give me that over the guy who is OK with it. Bob Sacamano
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 10, 2015 -> 12:08 PM) That's an attitude problem? I think that is a reach. I hope the White Sox get guys who want to play and aren't too pleased when they are sitting. You know we could get Adam Eaton from the White Sox but he's not worth the trouble. He has a bad attitude. He isn't happy when he doesn't play. Agree. Give me the guy who wants to be on the field.

There is another player with pretty similar stats. He had 158 K and 172 hits in 575 ABs. His name? Mike Trout.

That being you posted that article as exhibit A of attitude issues . What does sitting down a few innings have to do with attitude? That wasn't a "he needs a day off", that was a "he's not listening to the coaches" benching, hence why he gave that response. The talk at the time was it was about defensive positioning, the staff wanting him to play farther in and him not listening. If it gets to the point where "coaching staff has to bench you" for an attitude problem...guess what, there's an attitude issue implied by "benched for not listening to the coaches". You are really reaching. Does Chris Sale have attitude issues? He got into a screaming match with KW when the were going to make him a full time closer. He got into a screaming match with Ventura when Robin told him to give the Victor Martinez spying a rest. If they don't like where he is set up, they can always motion him to move in from the dugout. It actually happens all the time.
Eminor3rd
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/brett-lawri...ves-to-chicago/ Brett Lawrie’s Search for Past Success Moves to Chicago by Owen Watson - December 10, 2015 When the top 100 prospects in the game were ranked by Baseball America during the summer of 2010, Brett Lawrie was 26 spots ahead of Mike Trout. Both received a large cup of coffee in the majors during 2011 – Lawrie produced 2.6 WAR in just 46 games, while Trout put up 0.7 WAR in 40 – and there was a lot of optimism that we were witnessing two stars in the making: these were the athletic, ultra-talented position players of the future for two franchises. Four years have passed since those brief debuts, and we know the history of both players has been quite different: Trout has produced a stunning 37.8 WAR, establishing himself as a perennial candidate for best player in baseball, while Lawrie has produced 6.2 WAR in a series of injury-interrupted, slightly above average seasons. Being compared to Trout is unfair for basically every player in the game, but the point is this: early success doesn’t always mean continued success, mostly because baseball is about how well you adjust, not necessarily how much raw talent you have. A lot can change in the course of four seasons, especially when we’re trying to evaluate young players. Because of the content of the four years since his debut, we view Lawrie through a certain lens: he was a top prospect, but he’s not a top major-leaguer. He’s had his chance, the thinking goes, and this is what he’s done with it. Major-league baseball is a boiling hot cauldron into which young men are thrown, and they either develop sufficiently thick skin to handle the heat or they don’t. It’s been over four seasons, and this is who he is. Read More: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/brett-lawri...ves-to-chicago/
Eminor3rd
Older article that I thought was really interesting: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/brett-lawri...ng-balls-twice/ Brett Lawrie Saw 10 Straight Breaking Balls, Twice by Eno Sarris - April 30, 2015 Brett Lawrie doesn’t really have a problem with breaking balls, not if you zoom out on his career. He’s whiffed on sliders (14%) and curves (8%) at about an average rate (13% and 11%, respectively), which follows his overall whiff rates (8.6% for Lawrie, 8.5% is average). Opening week, in three games against the Rangers, Lawrie saw ten straight breaking balls… twice. He’d never seen ten straight breaking balls before. “They’re not going to stop until I make an adjustment,” Lawrie admitted before a game with the Mariners. But that statement’s not enough to uncover what it’s like to see a barrage of breaking balls like Lawrie did. And what it means, and how you claw your way out of a hole like the one he found himself in. Lawrie’s a loquacious dude: he’ll keep talking if you let him. So, at one point, I asked him about the thought process when something like this was happening, and he obliged. You can’t edit an inner monologue like this, especially when you know he’s describing what it feels like to strike out four times on 12 straight pitches: Read More: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/brett-lawri...ng-balls-twice/
Dunt
I find it really odd that people keep trying to compare Avi and Lawrie in this thread. They are completely different players.
