Bob Sacamano
QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 17, 2015 -> 05:34 PM) I can't tell if Bucket is serious or if he was just stating something vague and obvious. Buehrle>Wood
QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Dec 17, 2015 -> 05:35 PM) Absolutely. He's around it all. Breaks a lot of it and I guess he's KW go to? He was "leaking" that other teams had interest in KW. Pretty sure he has a direct line from KW.

CaliSoxFanViaSWside
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 17, 2015 -> 03:33 PM) Didn't he originally cover the Sox many moons ago? I always know that when Nightengale speaks about the Sox, I listen. Maybe you are thinking of Dave Nightingale. He covered the Sox many many moons ago . Way before your time. Assigned White Sox beat for the Chicago Daily News in 1966. Died in 2007. http://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/Dave_Nightingale Edited December 18, 2015 by CaliSoxFanViaSWside
caulfield12
Which is the one who used to write for the Sporting News? I remember that name, and Tracy Ringolsby, who I think writes for the Denver Post still...
ChiSoxFanMike
I wonder if Chris Johnson could be a possibility as a platoon partner with LaRoche at DH, as well as the backup 3rd baseman and 1st baseman.

If you had read the link I provided, Dave Nightingale actually was the 1st national correspondent for the Sporting News . He also was an official scorer at World Series and All Star games. SoCalSox
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Dec 17, 2015 -> 03:34 PM) This, combined with Bucket's new info. I really hope we can sign Upton soon. I think Bucket was more of stating the obvious in a cryptic way to screw with people... Although, I do really think they land Upton soon. NorthSideSox72
For me, just a few things I'd like them to do, and then I'd feel like they're in the right place. In terms of at least semi-realistic scenarios... --Sign one of Upton, Cespedes or Gordon, in that order of preference --Trade Avisail for prospects - I do think he could get you one good one at this point. I think he's a lost project, but other teams may try to wring something from him. --Re-sign Alexei for 1/7 (I think he takes it, maybe needs an option) That should put the 2016 payroll in the $130-135M range, which I think they are willing to do. Lineup, roster: Eaton 8 Carbera 7 Abreu 3 Frazier 5 New OF 9* (lineup spot and OF slot could vary based on which one) Lawrie 4 LaRoche 0 Ramirez 6 Navarro/Avila 2 Bench: Sanchez, Saladino, Shuck, Navarro/Avila Rotation: Sale, Rodon, Quintana, Danks, EJ/Turner/? Pen (no order): Robertson, Jones, Duke, Petricka, Putnam, Kahnle, Jennings/Phillips Eh?

Also, would rather keep Saladino starting given his glove his really good and the infield is light years better offensively now. So there is no pressure on him. The 7 million on Alexei I think could be used on another bench piece or a starting pitcher. Overall, good and realistic plan.

In theory we would definitely be better off putting that $$ towards a righty arm. Really wish we could have signed someone like Bartolo Colon. $8.25 mil, righty starter for the back end. I know he's old as dirt, and obviously a Met, but there's gotta be someone who fits that profile out there that we can nab.
caulfield12
It was actually one year and $7.25 million for Colon, but the point remains... That said, you pretty much have to give Erik Johnson a chance, and the idea of Colon back in the more challenging AL isn't as attractive for him as the NL. It's the same idea, basically, as Alexei instead of Saladino. 1) Is the possibly marginal performance improvement, if any, worth it for the veterans? 2) What do you prevent yourself from doing by spending that money for Colon/Ramirez rather than someone else? 3) How likely is it that Saladino and Johnson develop into regular contributors if you just leave them alone? 4) What additional value or benefit do you get from "veteran leadership" as opposed to the possibly hungrier younger players out to prove themselves? Obviously the more younger/cheaper/cost-controlled players you have, the better off you are from a financial standpoint. LDF
ok, here is my take on things as they have been address and the state of this team. the sox . i am extremely happy at how the sox have been addressing the major holes in this sinking ship, the difference is there, and i can't fault the fo, up until now. but i will go 1 step further, the propose budget of what the owners has stated, and what i have been using, 125 mil salary cap since yesterday in a post. now that should take the sox out of the running for any of the big bats that are left, and maybe a pitcher. this is unless the powers to be can convince the owners, that the window of opportunity for this team is now. esp in making a name for itself and compete in the media for their share of the chi baseball fans. so realistically what is needed, and what can be a good 3 rd option for each. of'er - every one is in agreement here dh - it is needed, but b/c of the salary, maybe a avi/laroche platoon ss- saladino, sp - ??? does the sox need another rp? Say that out loud. Ok, maybe Bartolo would get lit up in the AL, I can see that. Then find a guy who profiles well to eat up innings at the back end of the rotation and put up a sub 4 ERA vs the vaunted AL for under 8 mil. Colon might not have been the best match, I'll agree with you on that. If we roll the dice on Johnson and he falters, we'll have to grab someone off the waiver wire in May since internally we don't have anyone to slide into that role. Let's just hope EJ keeps it rolling from last September. If he could post 5 or even 6 innings per start like he did last season, that would obviously be golden. Dick Allen
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Dec 17, 2015 -> 10:14 PM) Also, is Albers 100% gone. He was a big piece last year for that bullpen... Chances of him repeating that performances are about as slim as he is not slim. Let someone else pay him and sign another guy. The Sox are usually halfway decent at picking up bullpen guys off the scrap heap. Putnam, Albers. Those guys get really cheap in about 3 weeks. blackmooncreeping
QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 18, 2015 -> 09:50 AM) Colon signed back with the Mets on a one year deal. Right, just saying someone like him profile-wise is needed for this rotation if they are really going for it. 2 question marks at the back end is pretty risky imo. Make that 1 question mark in Johnson and 1 below average, 4.75 ERA waiting to happen lefty named John Danks.
