Exactly, he took less guaranteed money, but took the deal that allows him to maximize his earning potential.

true and very spelled out ..... but didn't he also take a bonus that may pay him either now or in the future.

all this language of this contract is, to me, being worked in where they, the org, will have the contract end in the first optout, when they will be getting their own tv deal.

I just don't see how Bryant can win his grievance. Of course he was ready to be called up 9 games earlier. Of course the Cubs used the system to their advantage, but what constitutes the guy is ready? If someone hits a certain amount of HRs or his average is at a certain level, does he have to be called up?

Everyone is different. Bryant will get paid plenty if he is as good as advertised moving forward.

Boras tries to extract every dollar he can. That is fine. Teams try to save every dollar they can, which is also fine.

Hopefully Boras poisons his mind and creates a Cubs rift.

He did take less $$ overall but yeah it sets up as a better deal for him. He's going to cash in again when he's 29 years old. Bryce Harper is going to get $500 million.

Heyward got a $20 mil signing bonus and will make $78 mil in the first three years with a full no trade clause and an opt out. That was the best deal out there for him. From the sound of it, nobody else was offering those things. This is maybe the most player friendly deal ever given out.

so add that 20 mil to 78 mil and at the opt yr, which is 3 yrs. so it is not a bad contract 98 mil divided by 3 yr.

For sure. Other teams offered him $200 million guaranteed though so he technically did turn down more money.

True but he's taking a small gamble on himself to make a lot more, and if the gamble fails he will still make a ton of money.

Per Bernstein, Thompson a 2 war next year Frazier a 3.7......OK

The bigger thing matheny did not coddle heyward as much as maddon and that is what sealed the deal.....the $26m per had nothing to do with it.

Christ I just need to delete that as a preset.

Everyone wants to play for Joe Maddon. That is why Theo has only had to shell out about $400 million for Heyward, Lester, Zobrist, and Lackey. A steal.

This is second hand info, but....A friend of mine works with somebody who works for the Cardinals. This guy got us down onto the field for BP before one of the Sox games last season. He says that a Cardinal employee accused Heyward of doing something inappropriate during the season. The accusations were false and the employee got fired, but supposedly it really soured Heyward on the organization.

Matheny not happy with Heyward's comments

Funny thing is the Cardinals have a younger team than the Cubs. The Cubs position players are quite young, but they have one of the oldest pitching staffs in baseball.

I saw mlb.com had an article with the Cubs as the projected best rotation in baseball (at least by war) and the Sox weren't in the top five...not surprising I guess.

http://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=SP

They used these projections but limited it to just the top 5 pitchers. Projections for us are assuming Johnson and Turner share the load in the 5th spot, Rodon gets worse from last year instead of better, and Quintana sees decent regression. There's some upside in our projections, but a lot of it depends on Johnson.
