Y2Jimmy0
QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Jan 21, 2016 -> 02:11 PM) That whole waiting out the OF thing worked out pretty well for the Sox... Gordon back to KC, Upton to Det, etc. Can't say I'm surprised because this organization is a s*** show sometimes but still pretty disappointed. Not sure the Sox were ever guaranteeing 5 years though. I'm going to see what his contract looks like before I start speaking in absolutes about anything.
Y2Jimmy0
QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jan 21, 2016 -> 02:12 PM) Having the extra pool money available is very valuable, though. We could use the money from our third pick on top of the second to sign someone who otherwise wouldn't have signed at slot value. I recall a recent article that detailed how the Astros were doing exactly this to acquire talent. It's very valuable Flash, I've explained this numerous times. Nobody cares. SoCalSox
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jan 21, 2016 -> 12:12 PM) Like some poster here said, we took a road trip and stopped 3/4 of the way there. Typical White Sox. They wonder why their attendance numbers dwindle each year & it's because of this type of stuff. Let your division rivals get better & not complete the plan. SoCalSox
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 21, 2016 -> 12:13 PM) Not sure the Sox were ever guaranteeing 5 years though. I'm going to see what his contract looks like before I start speaking in absolutes about anything. Why would they ever think it would be less? 6 years is one thing but 4-5 years you do it, IMO. It was never realistic to expect him to take anything less than 4 at minimum.

2nd_city_saint787
I would have zero problem going after Fowler. Melky was much better when removed from the 2 hole. Grab Fowler put him and his .330+ OBP in the 2 hole, move Melky down, call it a day.
LDF
QUOTE (blackmooncreeping @ Jan 21, 2016 -> 08:42 PM) I believe Sox knew Danks was getting surgery before they offered that deal. I've always thought it was a terrible deal, one of KW's worst. i still maintain that it was all JR doing.... for this main reason. this is not a jump on JR rant. the sox really like the danks brothers and drafted jon twice. the first time Borasrse was his agent. then they, the danks got rid of the agent and then signed with the sox.... i am skipping parts. JR must have felt he owed jon a contract b/c jon trusted jr..... so jr returned the favor.... no one will say that jr never turned his back on anyone if they went to bat for jr. that loyalty is why i have always like of him and still does. loyalty in this age, this kind of loyalty is rare. Dick Allen
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 21, 2016 -> 02:08 PM) The draft pool money is just as important as the high pick itself. Last year our draft sucked because we were so limited financially. If Carson Fulmer is half as good as they say he is, the draft will be great. Go check out the 1989 White Sox draft. I think you would say it was one of the better drafts in team history despite only 1 player from the entire draft ever wearing a White Sox jersey. lasttriptotulsa
QUOTE (BigFinn @ Jan 21, 2016 -> 01:58 PM) After this season, Jose Abreu becomes arbitration eligible. He could be looking for a 5 year/$100+ commitment. If the Sox pushed all their chips in on Upton or Cespedes, they might be forced to trade Abreu for financial considerations. And I would rather have Abreu. He becomes Arb eligible, not a free agent. Meaning he is still under Sox control. He can ask for 5/100 all he wants but he ain't getting it as that would be a massive overpay for his arbitration years. By the time Abreu gets expensive, Robertson, Melky, LaRoche, Danks, Frazier and Lawrie will all be off the books. There will be plenty of money to pay Abreu. bear_brian
Does Mike Rizzo (GM of the Nationals) think that Williams and Hahn are just too stupid? First he dangles Adam Dunn out to Kenny, who trades for Edwin Jackson, only to find out that Rizzo doesn't want Jackson. then, after Dunn becomes a FA, we sign him and watch a lot of futility, followed by our next free agent ex-Nat Adam LaRoche. And now they swoop in seemingly last minute to take Cespedes off of the market and out of our hands. Wow, maybe we should hire Rizzo - just like we should have hired Dombrowski ... I don't know where this narrative started, but Jose being able to opt into arbitration does not give him power to negotiate like a free agent, nor become a free agent. He is under team control through 2019 and if he opts in, the difference in contract is negligible. It is not making a difference in how many years the team is offering free agents. Knackattack
QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jan 21, 2016 -> 12:27 PM) We'll call it a day at the end of the season too.......in fourth place. Still need an additional power bat somewhere Desmond at SS, Jackson in CF, move Eaton/Melky to right. Desmond adds 20 HR to the team and Ajax in CF upgrades the outfield defense enough to justify if he has an underwhelming bat. The guy was also a 5war player before the mausoleum in Seattle stole his career, so good chance he could bounce back.
