This tells me the White Sox do NOT see Kevan Smith or Rob Brantly as likely to be successful major leaguers, even as backups. If they thought both could likely do that well, they wouldn't have gotten Sanchez.

Two of the three will be in Charlotte, one will be gone.

I'm guessing Smith is gone. He's older than all 3 and didn't do much in AAA last year in a hitter friendly park.

Esteban Loiaza, Scott Kazmir, Colin McHugh, Jose Quintana, Bobby Jenks, Sergio Santos, JD Martinez

After the fact.

The whole concept of risk-reward is the picture BEFORE, not after. And there is no such thing as low-risk, high-reward before hand. It's a fantasy. Either you are high-risk and high-reward, or low-risk and low-reward.

This is actually a pretty good low-risk, high-reward signing.

This is much better than the high-risk, low yeild signing of LaRoche.

How exactly was LaRoche high-risk? $25 million over 2 years isn't really that much, and again, it's only 2 years. That inherently can't be that risky.

Not to nitpick here, but say at the time of Chris Sale's contract extension, would you consider it to be low risk, high reward? I personally would think so.

If low risk, high reward signings existed, GMs would be jumping at the opportunity to sign Hector Sanchez, or whomever else is classified as low risk, high reward.

Exactly. If something looks low risk/high reward, then you're misinterpreting either the level of risk or reward. The relationship between risk and reward makes low risk/high reward impossible. Period.

Now if somebody possesses information that others lack, it's a different story. If Hahn knew that Hector Sanchez was an alien who stole Buster Posey's talent but the rest of the market didn't, this signing would be low risk/high reward.
