They already overspent their allotment, and there are no escalating penalties. Since they will be penalized next two years makes sense to go all out.

Sox meanwhile, have not gone over, so this would put them over in that category. Therefore, would have been smarter for cubs to do it after signing like, 300 players, than sox with their 7-8 person class.

How steep are the penalties? This guy worth it?

Sox better be in on this after wiffing in FA this offseason

Sox can't really get involved. He'll go to Dodgers or Cubs because they've already gone way over their pool. If the White Sox were to sign Lazarito, they wouldn't be able to sign anyone from the 2016 class.

I would take that risk for him but we all know the Sox would never do this. The system is such a joke.

Just curious, but what's the latest with Eloy Jimenez?

He was probably the most hyped of the Cubs' prospects...like Adolfo for the Sox, but multiplied by a factor of 3X-5X.

And we can also say the team payroll luxury tax system in general is a joke, because we counted out the Tigers for most of the off-season and then, poof, Illitch authorized the Upton deal.

Surely the Angels will be next to "surprise but not really surprise" everyone...

Then again, the World Series winner last year had a payroll in the mid to high $120's for most of the season and the Yankees/Red Sox haven't taken over the world, that's "balance" in another sense. The Blue Jays would be another example, the Astros, the Mets and the Cubs, all those teams were successful without huge payrolls until the deadline last year or going into this offseason. Finally, the Dodgers sank like a rock with Boston, and the White Sox and Padres efforts to buy their way into contention fell flat.

Every Manfred interview I have seen makes it all but certain that an International Draft is coming very soon, so hopefully issues like this won't arise for much longer. But credit teams like the Cubs and Dodgers for using the system to their advantage unlike the Sox.

Which just means the teams who are getting that 2-year penalty likely won't even serve the full penalty once the draft is put in place, unless there is some sort of carryover penalty that is introduced, if that will even fly.

Because of Maitan?

No. They have guys lined up for the J2 in which they are going over. They have to sign him the next signing period or punt on the guys they have lined up.

Check that, the answer is obviously yes.

Yeah. Maitan and a ton of other guys that they basically have agreements with. They have a shot if they can push Lazarito down to J2 but it sounds like he's signing before that.

TODAY, 2:50pm: Lazarito and his agents are willing to consider offers that would involve waiting until the next signing period to sign, Sanchez tweets. Certainly, that would appear to open up his potential market to more teams and explain the involvement of so many organizations as he nears a decision.

Where did the Braves come up with all this money to sign Zaitan and Lazarito?

It's an interesting long-term play but won't help so much for the first years opening their new suburban stadium...nevertheless, it's a clear direction for the fans at least.

They do get to open their stadium with a s*** load of young pitching, Freeman at 1B, Enciarte and Olivera in the OF, and Dansby Swanson and Albies in the middle infield. They also have a huge bonus pool in the draft and are going nuts in free agency. Braves fans should be really excited actually.

7 of their top 8 BA top ten guys came within the last year from other organizations.

Pretty unusual to see a 30 year-old in Olivera still listed as the top prospect...but that gives those Eddy Alvarez backers some hope because he'd only be 27-28 when he hits the majors, granted, he skipped over 6 years of valuable development time with his skating career.

They really should be. They will probably look to spend in free agency next winter or trade prospect depth for legit players.

I don't mean to sound like a tool, but is there any legit proof that this guy is really 16?

He doesn't really have any reason to lie signing as a 16-year old. Unless he is saying he's older to be able to sign quicker.
