Sockin
Jon Heyman Giants are nearing a deal with denard span, sources say https://twitter.com/JonHeyman/status/685229511261163522
southsider2k5
That is another team out of the running.
ChiSoxFanMike
Good. We can take them off the list in the Cespedes sweepstakes.
SoCalSox
I truly think the Giants were a big contender. Good news for us Sox fans.
Jose Abreu
Hope they pay him enough where they wouldn't be able to afford Cespedes though. Given the OF market, Span may not get that much
shysocks
Don't think price matters, I imagine this takes them off the list.

GGajewski18
Anyway you want to look at this, this is HUGE news for he Sox. Baltimore, Tigers, Angels, Nationals and Sox left for these big OFers imo.

GGajewski18
QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 04:52 PM) Add Texas just to be safe. Texas has very limited payroll left. Plus, they have Brinson coming up soon. You are right, not to count them out, but they are last on my list of teams that I am worried about. I just can't see the Angels or Tigers signing one of the big OFers with their luxury tax concerns. I guess it's possible that they could, but it seems unlikely. fathom
Cards and Cubs also could be lurking with Fowler back to Cubs
Jose Abreu
There's never a set list of contenders for a given player. Everything is dynamic. There are more than 3-4 teams who can sign Cespedes.
GGajewski18
3 years/31 million for Span, plus incentives
justBLAZE
Can't see how this deal doesn't help the Sox, years and money.
GGajewski18
Bob Nightengale @BNightengale 1m1 minute ago The #SFGiants never considered long term deal with Cespedes or Upton before turning to Span Wasn't Rosenthal reporting couple days ago that Giants were looking at Cespedes and Upton? SoCalSox
QUOTE (Knuckles @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 03:04 PM) Can't see how this deal doesn't help the Sox, years and money. I felt like Span wasn't worth $10M per, honestly. Plus he's almost 33 & got 3 years. No chance one of the top 2 signs a 3 year deal, IMO. Baron
Boras somehow got Span 3 years
caulfield12
And Span had expected (well, maybe Boras) 3 years and $40-45 million months ago because of the lack ofvdraft pick attached. That said, you had the injury and age factors overhanging. Pagan moves to corner spot now.
OmarComing25
I like this deal for them, Span seems a better fit than Cespedes did.
spiderman
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 05:00 PM) 3 years/31 million for Span, plus incentives Wasn't this guy supposedly have to work out for teams? Now he gets a 3 year, 31 million deal? I do like Span, but I was expecting a 1 year deal for 6-8 million a season. Guess I was way off. Makes me wonder if we'll end up seeing much of a discount, if any, for some of the remaining free agents if teams are bidding against themselves. Makes me wonder if we'll end up seeing much of a discount, if any, for some of the remaining free agents if teams are bidding against themselves. He was injured at the end of last season, so he was probably working out to prove he's healthy to the interested teams. The guy is still a very good player when healthy. He tallied up 10.8 fWAR in the 3 previous seasons leading up to 2015. His defense has slipped a bit because of age, and it might be time to move him to the corner OF. But I see value in a 3 year contract with $10M AAV.
