Here's a copy of formal charges filed by the US Attorney's office in Houston against Chris Correa #Astros #Cardinals https://www.dropbox.com/s/0sn3jgz04wirx3m/C...ctment.pdf?dl=0

Two wows from the Chris Correa indictment:

1) He accessed Astros' database during the '13 draft.

2) He did the same July 31, deadline day.

The biggest one: When Astros changed database URL, Correa hacked an exec's email, got the new URL/password and accessed the database again.

"Chris Correa, 35, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Houston to five counts of unauthorized access to a protected computer. As part of his plea, he admitted accessing the accounts of three Houston Astros employees, including information about prospects, Astros scouting reports and trade discussions. He also admitted taking measures to conceal his identity and the location of his computer and admitted that the "intended loss" for all of the hacking was about $1.7 million."

Here's the detailed story from the Post Dispatch...

Each conviction of unauthorized access of a protected computer carries a maximum possible sentence of five years (up to 25 years total) in federal prison and a possible $250,000 fine. Correa will pay $275,000 in restitution as well.

The value of the information that Correa gained unauthorized access has been set at $1.7 million. Federal attorneys said they came to the $1.7 million figure based on the Astros’ scouting budget and the number of players included in the database.

Usually I think Passan is an idiot, but I agree with him this time.

The Cardinals deserve severe punishment for that. If the league won't dole it out, they have zero credibility.

Losing draft picks? Losing the ability to sign international free agents? Yadier Molina has to play center field for the rest of his career?

Loss of picks and/or fines makes the most sense.
