Keith Foulke

Don't know if anyone else saw this or not, but they were discussing AL MVP on Around the Horn and both Woody Paige and Mariotti picked Keith Foulke as their AL MVP.

Not that I agree with them, but if you look at Foulke's numbers, it'll kinda make you sick as a Sox fan.

I believe he has 8 wins, 43 saves, a whip of .88 and opponents are hitting under .200 against him. Unreal. Kudos to Keith for a great season.

If Keith Foulke is the MVP of the American League, then Madonna is the leading candidate to be the next Pope.

that's absurd.

Is this the same Foulke who went to Manuel last season and asked to be replaced as the closer because he lost his confidence?

And the same Foulke who gave it up in Game One of the 2000 Division Playoffs against Seattle?

And the same one who let Giambi hit one 900 feet in a critical game with the Yankees last season?

Just asking.

He's had a good year. But he's hardly the MVP -- of the As, even.

Gimme Hudson or Chavez any time.

He's in his walk year, which means somebody (like the Cubs) will greatly overpay for him for 2004

I also didnt want him around this year. I belive it was a Yankee game last year, where we were winning 4-1 in the ninith, and Foluke blew up. I was there, and just lost faith in him. Do i wish he was here now with those numbers, hell yes, but at the time he needed to go.

He gave up a ding-dong to Giambi in the ninth to blow it. I felt at the time and still do that that game was the turning point of the season. It killed the Sox.

Ok, whatever guys....fact is, look at his numbers after the all-star break in 2002:

G GS W L SV CG SHO    IP  H R  ER HR BB K  ERA WHIP  BAA
Pre All Star   36 0 1 4 9   0 0    41.0 40 22 22 5  10 31 4.83 1.22 .253
Post All-Star  29 0 1 0 2   0 0    36.2 25 4   3 2  3  27 0.74 0.76 .191

He should still be here, as the closer, plain and simple. Damn, Sox fans have such selective memories, only remembering the few times players don't get it done, instead of the overwhelming amount of times that they did get it done. In his time as a White Sox player, Keith had 100 saves, 425 K's in 446 IP, and a 2.87 ERA. Yeah, I can see all of you guys points clearly, he wasn't needed here at all

I disagree that he is the AL MVP, but plain and simple, he's better than any option we have in the bullpen right now, by far. He may also be the best closer in baseball this season besides Gagne and Smoltz.

Of course he's blown up a few times (what closer hasn't, including Rivera in game 7 of the World Series) but wasn't it Jerry Manuel who last season removed Foulke from the closer's role (at Foulke's request) and then never inserted him back into the role after Foulke was dominant the second half of the season. In fact, I remember some Sox fans cringing when Foulke was given the chance to pick up a save (which he did) in a game late in the season last year against Minnesota. Instead of using that as a building block for Foulke, JM fell in love with Osuna and Marte.

The guy's good, like him or not.

he's a good pitcher.

he's not the MVP.

He's not the Cy Young

He's probably Fireman of the Year.

But he didn't want to be here.

he'll get his chance to show how good he really is in October.

He wasn't so hot in October the last time around as I remember:

2 games

2.1 innings

4 hits

2 walks

2 Home runs

3 runs

all earned

11.57

and one loss -- a critical GAme One loss, I might add

Frankly, I'll take Damaso

show me, Keith

Thing is, WU83, he didnt want to be here BECAUSE OF HOW HE WAS TREATED. And that blame goes squarely on KW. Cameo Williams wanted his own man in here, and didn't care for Foulke at all, no matter what his numbers were.

Foulke has the best bullpen numbers of anyone in baseball the last 4 years, except for Rivera.

He had a bad half of the year, and corrected his release poiunt, and had an era under 3 for the season.

If the numbers tell us he is one of the best, why woulsnt you want him here?

By the way, except for Rivera, there arent too many closers who have succeeded without failure in the postseason.

Foulke pitched a scoreless 9th in game one of 2000. If we get the run in the ninth, he gets the win.

I'm sorry the trade didn't work out better, but I was happy to see him go.

I'm always happy to see a goof GM trade one of the most reliable AL closers for a dead arm "power" closer..... especially when said pitcher got his s*** together after a rough first half and had an ERA under 1 for the second half.

Let's remember too that JM..... and MOSTLY KW..... didn't allow Foulke to blow too many saves last season cause KF was one of the only ones who would stand up to KW and his buffet table flipping antics. KW saw his chance to "demote" KF after a few rough outings and he took it. f*** KW for letting his personal feelings dictate the direction he'd take for the team. And f*** JM for allowing KW to do that.

Too bad neither did the same thing when Botch was getting hit like he was a f***ing T-Ball stand :bang

Jim Mecir gave up the game-winner to the Angels last night.

Originally, I thought the A's got "Foulked!"

Nope. We got butt-Foulked by KW (like always) with his personal trade for Botch. But he's an aggressive GM trading for more offense when, it should be clear after 2002, that offense isn't going to win you any Championships. Maybe it'll get through his thick melon when the White Sox don't make the postseason this year either.

That's funny. I thought the Sox had arguably the best top 4 in the rotation in the league. Half of them were added by KW just this past off season. Then everyone has said over and over again that the Sox have a very strong bullpen, mainly because of Flash Gordon and the addition of Scott Sullivan. It appears the main reason the Sox might lose is because of a lack of offense, but you rag on KW for trying to add more offense??? Strange.

You see it as lack of offense. I see it as KW doing his Gm'ing duties half-assed and not trading for a reliable 5th starter. The Sox were 1-3 in games Cotts started..... in August. Danny Wrong is 1-7 (?) on the season..... although the Sox did win a few games (one Cubs game for example) that Wrong started although he didn't get the win. That's 10 losses out of 12 games by record right there started by the 5th starter spot. And what was Stewart? I know he won one and lost one to Detroit. I can't recall that far back in the season but what was his record when he was sent down to the minors? I'm willing to bet it was atleast a game under .500.

Fact of the matter is, the 5th spot was a problem all season long that KW failed to address and now it's coming back to bite us. He did make sure though to trade for more offense when a player we had at one of the traded for positions was starting to get hot (Everett/Rowand).
