Walt Williams R.I.P.

I received an e-mail a few minutes ago and confirmed it with the local newspaper that Walt Williams, who played for the Sox from 1967-1972 passed away Saturday at a hospital in Brownwood, Texas where he lived. He was 72.

 

Walt was always generous with his time when I'd call him, always funny, laughing and full of life. So sorry to get this news.

 

He was a tough player who always hustled and gave it his best.

 

It's been a bad year for the White Sox family to be sure.

Sad news. RIP "No Neck." Always was a favorite of mine. Mr. Hustle. God bless and comfort his family.

Just read your interview. What a nice guy and hard working ballplayer.

 

Two things I picked up: One was how contracts were negotiated back then. Fricking Jerome Holtzman of all people had to tell Walt to stand up for himself and get paid a bit more. And Ed Short threatens Walt with at bats and sure enough Walt didn't get the at bats after that.

 

Also ... would the Sox have won the 67 pennant had Walt not been benched? Sure seems like they might have.

Also ... that was good stuff about the Bahnsen 1-hitter. Why did the Sox think Walt Williams would go against the unwritten book and bunt with two outs in the ninth of a no hitter? So weird. And then the Cleveland fans trash his car for busting up a no hitter???? What a mean period of time that must have been.
