Y2Jimmy0
Not sure if this is thread worthy but RV was just on SportsTalk Live on CSN. Kaplan asked him about Cespedes/Gordon pursuit and if it was a real thing. He said that interest was definitely real but it's ultimately up to those guys and they both wanted to return their teams. Who knows if that's really the case or not but it's a good discussion point. He said they were realistic options though. He also said that everyone called about Tim Anderson all offseason. caulfield12
The best shot we had was Upton, and apparently he prefers Detroit as an organization over the Sox because it's certainly not based on lifestyle/standard of living in the two cities...and it's not like Comerica offers him the opportunity to put up the stats USCF would, either. BlackSox13
Gordon wanted to stay in KC, Cespedes wanted to stay in NY and Upton supposedly wasn't interested in the Sox. You can't force players to sign where they don't want to be. Sox fans just need to accept it and move on.
SoxSteve
QUOTE (Tony @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 06:24 PM) That's 100% false. What's false? He preferred Detroit or we didn't even try? I thought he would be he easiest of the 3 with a 2 year buyout. Thanx

caulfield12
If Upton didn't want to come to Chicago, and this rumor was out there well before a contract theoretically could have been offered by the Sox...what were the reasons other than this "he was never interested" without further clarification? Nobody's going to argue that Detroit had a far superior team, although they certainly had been much more active in free agency (especially Zimmerman) up until that point. We always hear the common refrain that money always trumps everything else (with a few exceptions), so what gives?

fathom
Cespedes is receiving a ten million dollar signing bonus over the next 30 days. I doubt the Sox had that in their budget. A lot of these playoff teams are using their revenue from the playoff games and utilizing it on signing bonuses. Thus it doesn't count towards their 2016 budget. caulfield12
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/mlb-salaries-...-220442264.html Passan article on record free agent signings and some interesting payroll numbers, like the Brewers. Right now, the White Sox are sitting in 16th place. Almost exactly in the middle. FWIW, only one team in the last 23 years has won the World Series with a 3rd or 4th quartile payroll. Going into the off season the Sox had positional holes at RF, DH, 2B, 3B, SS and C. That's two thirds of the lineup. Half of those holes have been filled so some progress has been made. I'd like to see if the Sox make any more additions before I light my torch and prepare to storm Castle US Cellular to slay Count Reinsdorf.
