Fangraphs 10 worst moves of off season

I really can't believe the Rockies are adding veterans with the main goal being to compete this year? (Didn't work so well for the Padres, for example.)

Just accumulating assets to trade them off doesn't make sense if they have legit prospects in the high minors. I get McGee, but Parra and potentially Desmond are a bit riskier unless the price is just too much of a bargain to pass up.

Everytime I look at that Dbacks-Braves trade, it continues to look worse and worse.

My friends that are D-Backs fans talked about how they didn't hurt their future.

My response was that they did and even if they didn't think that, the package they gave up for Miller could have netted a lot better pitchers.

No kidding?

No offense to your friends but I don't think they realize what AZ gave up in that package. Call me crazy but I would have taken that package for Q, who is at least equally as good and comes with more years of control that should give Q surplus value over Miller.

They really don't. They also think they got a WAAAAAAY better pitcher than Shelby Miller.

My best friend is a Dbacks fan. I gave him s*** relentlessly for it. He too claims it was a good move. Says the whole point is that they are better in 2016 for having made that trade, so the future pieces don't matter. Except, I don't even know that they ARE better in 2016 after the Miller trade.

They just completely undervalue Inciarte.

Arizona's farm is always turned out a lot of talent so it may be true that they didn't hurt their future. But it's also true that they could've improved by a lot more than Shelby Miller, while not hurting it.

They gave up the number one overall pick of last years draft. I mean, that in itself is just awful, and absolutely hurts their future. They didnt even have the guy in their system for a season

I could only imagine what you would be saying if the Sox did somethign similar with Fulmer and whatever would be the equivalent of Inciarte. You would have blown a blood vessel and named it hero

I clearly said that they didn't get anywhere near the value for the prospects they traded. But it could also be true (it has been in the past ) that their farm is a heck of a lot stronger than the Sox farm, which gives them the ability to trade their good prospects without hurting future).

The Red Sox also woefully overpaid for relief pitcher. They didnt hurt their future. I long for the day when making such trade wouldn't hurt the Sox future

BA ranked the Sox farm at #23 and the Arizona farm at #22. The Diamondbacks have developed some good players recently but their farm was definitely not deep enough or strong enough to trade away Swanson and Blair without hurting their future.

If your team was so bad you had the #1 pick in the draft, and you trade that player 6 months later, you either drafted terribly or made a big mistake. To say a franchise is not hurting it's future by giving away a #1 overall pick is crazy, especially coming from you.

Considering they just traded for a SS who can't hit or field, it makes it even more outrageous.

It's pretty obvious they don't value defense the way the majority of the league now does. They just see a league average contact hitter, nothing more.

Which is ironic because they have seemingly always had really good defensive players recently. Montero, Parra, Pollock, Eaton, Inciarte, Goldy, Ahmed, Peralta.

Again I clearly said that the trade was a woeful overpay.

Interesting you mention the comparative farm system rankings.

In 2015, Law ranked Arizona 14, and now they are 24.

In 2015, Law ranked Sox 12, and now they are 22. (yes, #1 prospect promoted; but Arizona made other stupid movies beyond the Miller trade, like giving away #4 prospect to braves in mid-season)

Yeah seriously. They should have just paid Arroyo haha and wasn't that prospect their number 1 pick in 2014? They love giving them away

The Sox got a 35 homer 3B and a starting 2B to raid their farm system, plus graduated their #1 prospect to the front of their rotation.

You said the Arizona farm was a lot stronger than the Sox farm, and that the Diamondbacks can afford to trade away their good prospects without hurting their future. Neither of those things are true.
