chw42
I don't think his physical shape matters. It's his mental shape that does. Until he learns not to swing at balls and takes better routes in the OF, he won't be able to utilize all of his talent.
NorthSideSox72
QUOTE (chw42 @ Feb 19, 2016 -> 10:55 AM) I don't think his physical shape matters. It's his mental shape that does. Until he learns not to swing at balls and takes better routes in the OF, he won't be able to utilize all of his talent. I agree, it's mostly between the ears with him (though getting in better shape certainly shouldn't hurt). He just seems unable to grasp or stick with the adjustments I know the club is asking him to make at the plate. And I think he's got generally poor baseball instincts. Those are hard things to fix. shysocks
Can we use this as a catch-all for all the awesome things we'll be hearing about Garcia in the coming weeks?
BlackSox13
Well done with the sarcasm Calcanterra! That truely is a funny read. And here I thought the " best shape of my life " bit was reserved for middle aged folks.
chw42
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 19, 2016 -> 10:57 AM) I agree, it's mostly between the ears with him (though getting in better shape certainly shouldn't hurt). He just seems unable to grasp or stick with the adjustments I know the club is asking him to make at the plate. And I think he's got generally poor baseball instincts. Those are hard things to fix. I find it kinda ironic that he used to be called Little Miggy. Yeah, he kinda looks like Miguel Cabrera, but he's the exact opposite in terms of talent. Miggy's issue is that he's not very athletic due to his frame. But his baseball instincts, especially at the plate, are some of the best in the majors. Meanwhile, you have a real athletic player in Avi who has really poor baseball instincts and pitch selection.
Dick Allen
Avi lost a ton of weight last offseason. Was barely recognizable at Soxfest. Said he was eating fish. Obviously he gained some of it back, but it didn't help him too much. Maybe his knee will feel better lighter, but as everyone pointed out.......... bmags
We need Marc Trestman to whisper him, build the man, build the player.
ChiSoxFanMike
Avi should try the Babe Ruth approach and eat as many hot dogs and drink as much beer as possible and see if it works for him.

fathom
Avi needs to just take the Toronto approach and swing out of his ass on every pitch
Dick Allen
QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 19, 2016 -> 11:18 AM) Avi needs to just take the Toronto approach and swing out of his ass on every pitch I agree. Open his stance and try to hit everything on the plate and in into the LF seats.

Yes, sportswriters get paid a lot of money. Very profitable industry.
Whisox05
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 19, 2016 -> 11:24 AM) I agree. Open his stance and try to hit everything on the plate and in into the LF seats. Isn't one of his biggest issues is he hasn't learned to pull the ball much. bmags
Can we take one glimmer of hope? He seemed to follow instructions to pull the ball for 2 weeks and hit 4-5 home runs. He just doesn't seem like a coachable player.

OmarComing25
Even if this new approach somehow works and he improves his hitting, his defense and baserunning will still be atrocious, and we'll still want to upgrade RF.

It'll be a lot easier to stomach his bad defense if he gives you a wRC+ above 110.

Well if hes not a coachable player along with the fact the Sox can't seem to teach well on the offense side for young players its probably a lost cause lol

winninguglyin83
There will be stories written like this at 29 of 30 big-league camps this weekend. the exception will be the Wrigleys. All their guys have always been in shape and will alway be in shape in their quest for 162-0.
Whisox05
You know every year we get these articles about players being in the best shape of their life. When are we going to start getting articles of players are in the best hitting, pitching or defense spot in their lives lol. Avi could be in the best shape of his life but if he can't hit the ball or catch it then sure doesn't matter about the shape he's in Edited February 19, 2016 by WhiteSoxLifer
Dick Allen
QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Feb 19, 2016 -> 12:02 PM) You know every year we get these articles about players being in the best shape of their life. Avi could be in the best shape of his life but if he can't hit the ball or catch it then sure doesn't matter about the shape he's in That's coming. Everyone who struggled last year will look great. It will be night and day from last year. LaRoche is due for an article like this. Latos will be in ace form as well. I'm still wondering if anyone will tell us Jesse Crain has a chance of breaking with the team even though he isn't even there.
