I only hope the gamethreads on Cubs sites look as bad as they do here when the team is losing. Awful day today for the Cubs, but it means nothing.

They believe they are the team of destiny. I'm sure this bump doesn't meant s*** to them.

Cubs' biggest deal could be Jake Arrieta contract … but it won't be easy

I will say it now. For that price, (7 years, maybe more, and $200+ million) the Cubs are really smart to let him walk away. This is the part of the Red Sox rebuild that Theo really screwed the pooch on, and that is really bad free agent contracts.

If I'm the Cubs, I'll forgive bad contracts in favor of at least one WS championship.

If they don't win this year, there is definitely some room for concern, as I would imagine the Cubs would prefer to not pay that kind of $$$$.

He already has given out some bad contracts.

The weather in October could play a big role in the playoff run as the pitching and defense becomes the focal point.

The proposals I've seen about this are hilarious

You mean a team that desperately needs pitching wouldn't want Duane Underwood as the only pitching prospect they receive?

Exactly lol. Every proposal includes Schwarber (coming off a major knee injury), Baez (bust potential is high), and Soler (what has he done in the majors exactly?)

Any trade for Trout would start with Bryant. Plain and simple.

Still, they don't have the pitching to get it done. Mets seem like a better fit, as they could offer something like Syndergaard, Conforto and prospects.

For what it would take to get Trout, I don't think it'd be worth it for anyone to trade for him.

Yep, it's not like Cubs really need him. If anything, they should keep their trade chips for another ace pitcher under control.

Especially when you start looking at all of those $30 million seasons coming up. Not only do you have to pay the guy, but you'd also have to find guys to fill all of the holes you would create to get him.

Signing Jake Arrieta to a long-term deal is the right choice for the Cubs

http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/cubs/post/...ore-free-agency

I'm sure whatever contract extension he signs won't hamstring their payroll (atleast until some of their younger players also start receiving higher salaries), but Jake to me just hasn't looked the same. His average velocity is down (which is supported by PitchFX), although admittingly he does seem to historically start lower. But what I've noticed is just the lack of bite to some of his pitches and his control is off. Even Jake Arrieta at 80% is still an awesome pitcher, although I'd be weary going anywhere over 200 million. I really believe he's a year or two away from major shoulder injury. I know people don't think much of his delivery, but it's so damn unnatural and he only recently redeveloped it.

Here's a long list of at least 10 bad free agents signings that Epstein was involved with in Boston.

The major one that sticks out with the Cubs has been Edwin Jackson, and the numbers weren't astronomical, just inconvenient...and it helped to have a veteran presence on those younger/rebuilding teams, no matter how poorly he was pitching, he was always a good teammate/clubhouse chemistry guy. Someone like Ryan Sweeney, once again, "bridge" players to get to your next wave of prospects and hopefully hold their positions competently. If not, you can discard them.
