GGajewski18
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Feb 22, 2016 -> 12:09 PM) So you think that Rollins is still in his prime? I guess he could be, but it seems unlikely as he's already 37 years old. This is off-topic, but this signing pretty much wipes out the chance of the Sox going after Desmond, right? hi8is
I think Desmond is the 2016 version of Morales in 2014. Won't sign until June or whatever due to the draft pick compensation and slim SS market.

I'd like the look of this team a lot more if LaRoche and Avi can just be league average hitters.
BlackSox13
QUOTE (Dunt @ Feb 22, 2016 -> 12:05 PM) That fully sounds like your starting SS barring abysmal ST results How so? I see nothing is Hahn's comments that indicate Rollins WILL be the starting SS. Rollins is signed to a minor league contract with a ST invite. The Sox didn't sign Rollins to be the starting SS, they signed him to compete for the SS job and as a precautionary measure to injury or failure on Saladino's part. Really nothing worth reading into, it is, actually, what it is.

I would imagine in order to turn down a higher guarantee elsewhere he had to get some level of assurance from Rick that he had a real high chance at the job. Balta1701
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 22, 2016 -> 01:27 PM) I believe if all things are equal in spring training, Rollins wins the job. I would imagine in order to turn down a higher guarantee elsewhere he had to get some level of assurance from Rick that he had a real high chance at the job. I disagree with this, at least the part on the "Higher guarantee". Especially with Desmond still on the market, if Rollins were able to get a guaranteed deal from any team wanting to compete with a hole at SS, he would have done so. There may be teams that still feel they could upgrade at SS and compete, but they similarly judged Rollins not worthy of a major league contract offer. The only place Rollins would have possibly gotten a "higher guarantee" as you put it is if he went to a team that is a non-obvious contender...but even then, those teams aren't likely to spend money on a late-30s SS even if they're looking at the trade deadline. I'm guessing that's what you're imagining with a hypothetical "higher guarantee", but this is a league where Alexei only got $3 million and Rollins is older and fell off equally hard last year. I think this is probably comparable to the offers he got elsewhere...perhaps he got slightly more money as an option here, perhaps he got an earlier opt out, or possibly he may have just thought this was his best chance to make a roster. Chisoxfn
I actually don't mind this issue. By all accounts Rollins is an extremely good clubhouse guy. He's still a solid defender (no longer plus), etc, although his bat has deteriorated, OPS was still solid for a SS (especially in 2nd half where he benefited from what I presume were more favorable platoon splits / match-ups as I recall his playing time taking a bit of a reduction down the stretch for the Dodgers). Still, very little risk related to this move and some protection. Obviously not a move that puts you over the top, but could hedge some downside at the SS position. Chicago White Sox
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 22, 2016 -> 12:33 PM) I actually don't mind this issue. SSS, but I beleive Rollins put up a .700 OPS in the 2nd half last year. I'm more concerned about his defense than his bat to be honest. asindc
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Feb 22, 2016 -> 12:41 PM) Just add Rollins to the ever growing list of players that the Sox get past their primes. Griffey, Ramirez, Vizquel, Jones, Dunn, LaRoche, etc. It's pathetic. Yeah! And what's the deal with signing Jeremy Guthrie, Casey Janssen, Clint Barmes, Brian Duensing, Carlos Marmol, Craig Breslow, Hideki Okajima, Fernando Rodney, Brendan Ryan, and Carlos Quentin? BlackSox13
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 22, 2016 -> 12:27 PM) I believe if all things are equal in spring training, Rollins wins the job. I would imagine in order to turn down a higher guarantee elsewhere he had to get some level of assurance from Rick that he had a real high chance at the job. I really don't see it. The minor league contract with a ST invite doesn't sound much assurance that Rollins' has a high chance at the job. To me, it says that if Rollins can out-perform Saladino, then he will be the starter but he has to beat Saladino in ST in order to do so. I think fans are looking way too deep into this. At this point, Rollins is signed to compete for SS and as a potential depth piece, nothing more.
