Our window of opportunity is not closing nearly as fast as you think it is. We have our core of Sale, Quintana, Rodon, Abreu and Eaton all locked up for the next four years (with Eaton, Quintana and Rodon locked up longer). We also have Anderson and Fulmer waiting in the wings who should make their presence know in 2017 or late 2016 along with other solid prospects such as Tyler Danish, Spencer Adams and Trey Michalczewski all just a couple years away. We also have two draft picks within the first 27 this year and three total in the first two rounds so our minors should be getting stockpiled pretty quickly. The organization as a whole is in a pretty good spot right now and are setting themselves up well to compete for the next half decade or so. The biggest thing the Sox going for them is that they have zero bad franchise crippling contracts on the books. Sure LaRoche, Danks and Cabrera are overpaid for what they are now but they are all short term contracts.

Agreed. But that is also a sign they have not made any "impact " FA signings or trades in the last couple of years. Hopefully Frazier has an impact season but time will tell. They have been certainly cautious this off-season which is commendable but they also could be a .500 team because of it.

You make a lot of great points. The only thing I'd say to you is that Chris Sale is probably not all that interested in the team being competitive towards the end of his current contract. He actually made the comment the other day that he has yet to play in a "meaningful game" in his entire career. That's a pretty strong statement to make, and is obviously indicative of where his mind is at in terms of the team competing sooner rather than later. He actually went on further to say that it's all about making the playoffs, with anything less unacceptable. So at this point, for guys like Sale and Abreu, they might not be too interested in looking at this as a long term project, waiting for the likes of the Adams, Danish' and Michalczewskis to come along before the team is competitive once again.

They are under contract for 4 more years. What do you think their not going to play up to their ability or demand a trade or what? If the team is not competitive they will be playing for their next FA contract after the 2019 season or if they demand a trade the Sox will receive a haul back that would have to be a nice blend of near/Major League bats and prospects.

Completely disagree. In the past couple years they have won a trade in which they acquired their leadoff hitter/center fielder, signed their current first basemen/number 3 hitter to the largest international free agent contract off all time (at the time) and traded for a starting third basemen who is a back to back all star that hit 35 home runs last year. They also outbid teams for the best closer on the market and signed him to a 4 year deal. If you go back a couple more years they also signed their number 2 starter off the free agent scrap pile. Those players make up a pretty big part of the cornerstone of the franchise right now so I'm not sure how you can say they have not made any impact signings or trades.

and the idea is to max the star player best yrs, not spending on draft picks and having to wait until they are ready to sniff the major league. as i have been saying this, idea of fixing this club needs to be done on several fronts simultaneously.

That is exactly what they have been doing. Looking at what will probably be their 25 man roster along with a few others that have a chance or will be coming shortly, it is a good mix. They have made some good trades, some good draft picks and a good amount of free agent signings. Some of which worked out great other ones that have not.

Amateur Draft

1. Chris Sale

2. Nate Jones

3. Jake Petricka

4. Erik Johnson

5. Carlos Rodon

6. Tim Anderson

7. Carson Fulmer

Trades

1. John Danks

2. Adam Eaton

3. Avisail Garcia

4. Todd Frazier

5. Brett Lawrie

6. Daniel Webb

7. Leury Garcia

Free Agents

1. Jose Abreu (largest international free agent contract ever at the time)

2. David Robertson (required draft pick compensation)

3. Melky Cabrera (required draft pick compensation)

4. Jose Quintana

5. Adam LaRoche

6. Zach Duke

7. Dioner Navarro

8. Mat Latos

9. Alex Avila

10. Matt Albers

11. Jacob Turner

12. Zach Putnam

Bravo. And add to that that they have been active not just on the free agent market, but the international free agent market, and the July 2 market, in addition to turning out valuable prospects through their farm system. Guys like Tyler Saladino and Carlos Sanchez are also worth mentioning.

With Sale, it's certainly a possibility, if not a probability. He's entering his 7th season with the club, and at some point probably sooner rather than later, if the next season or two continue to look like his first six, he very well could demand a trade. The guy was very clear - he wants to win!

Yes they are. Not sure how I forgot to add them.

Right now, the only thing that matters is beating three and most likely four AL Central opponents...Detroit has arguably improved as much if not more, the Indians are a little better (Brantley is the biggest x factor), KC is 3-5 games worse and the Twins inexplicably waiting back for the trade deadline infuriating their fans who are impatient with the Pohlads.

So the majority of this listing comprised the 2015 roster that finished 10 games below .500 with very few injuries. This year we add ( we hope) 1 good addition in Lawrie and a very good one in Frazier and a crapshoot w Navarro, Latos, Turner, Rollins, Avila etc. We lose Shark and Alexei. We probably don't get any help from Anderson or Fulmer. We still hope an OF is added. I agree the overall picture is better than it was 2 years ago, but I think .500 is the ceiling and we hope 2017 we make a run at a wildcard.

Fortunately it's not really up to Sale. His job is to go out there and pitch, and I am pretty convinced hell do just that.

The powers that be (billionaire investors accustomed to juicy dividend checks) opened the checkbook post 2005 and the FO couldn't make it happen… 3 Playoff appearances in 16 yrs… rather than "stupid or negligent". . how about just "ineffective" ?

Now, now - don't be too critical. We've actually had it pretty good these past 16 years. Consider what your parents and grandparents were treated to in the 39 years prior - just two playoff appearances! Two playoff appearances between 1960 and 1999. And some wonder why we don't have a larger, more blindly loyal fan base today!!
