Y2Jimmy0
With the retirement of LaRoche, the White Sox have an extra roster spot on their 25 man roster. I expect them to add a LHH of some sort to the roster to take LaRoche's spot. Until then though, it seems like there is an opportunity for some guys. Here is what I think it would be with nobody else added (40 man is at 38 so I expect some movement). Pitchers Chris Sale Jose Quintana Carlos Rodon John Danks Mat Latos David Robertson Nate Jones Zach Duke Zach Putnam Dan Jennings Jake Petricka Matt Albers I believe that Jacob Turner and Erik Johnson both end up at Charlotte because there seemingly isn't a spot for either of them as currently constructed. Former Top Prospect Phillippe Aumont has had a solid spring and could push someone for a job as well. Position Players Jose Abreu Brett Lawrie Jimmy Rollins Tyler Saladino Todd Frazier Adam Eaton Avisail Garcia Melky Cabrera Austin Jackson Alex Avila Dioner Navarro I think those are the locks. I expect a trade for a LHB. This leaves Carlos Sanchez, J.B. Shuck, Jerry Sands, and Travis Ishikawa battling for 2 spots. What does everyone else think? Did I forget anyone? flavum
Shuck is a lock right now. He was pretty solid last year, and hasn't done anything to knock him off the roster. Sanchez is probably going back to AAA, barring a trade. It's down to Sands or Ishikawa if they don't make any other moves---but I do think they have one more in them this week. A trade could include Petricka or Putnam, which would bring a guy to the OD roster that profiles more of a long reliever-- Carroll, Johnson, or Turner. A couple other guys that still have life--Leury and Lombardozzi. Edited March 21, 2016 by flavum
cabiness42
SP: Sale, Quintana, Rodon, Danks, Turner RP: Robertson, Duke, Jones, Putnam, Albers, Jennigs, Petricka, Kahnle C: Avila, Navarro IF: Abreu, Lawrie, Rollins, Frazier, Saladino OF: Cabrera, Jackson, Eaton, Garcia, Sands If the Sox acquire a position player before or shortly after opening day, that guy replaces Kahnle. If not, then either Davidson or Sanchez replaces Kahnle within the first two weeks. Latos on the DL to start the season and eventually replaces Turner. Sands hits very well vs LHP and can play 1B. Shuck has reverse splits, isn't that great, and would be unnecessary to keep if they acquire another LHB. daggins
I agree with this for the most part, but I think they keep Ishikawa, Sands is claimed off waivers, Turner passes thru waivers, and EJ, Kahnle and Carlos Sanchez see significant time in Chicago this year. Hatchetman
After lo these many years I still cannot wrap my head around a seven man bullpen and how that can actually be the optimal roster.

cabiness42
I don't think there's any chance that they keep 13 pitchers. Only for the first couple weeks while they see how guys are doing. You can live with only 3 bench players for up to two weeks.

Short answer no, long answer no with the caveat that bullpen guys can sometimes just get good. But in terms of talent and stuff, no.

he gone.
Don't follow bullpen battles enough to give a good analysis. The 5th spot is weak. Have a feeling Latos will be long relief or gone by July. Ultimately I think that's Fulmer's spot. But as for Opening Day? Last bench spot? To be honest. I hate the Rollins signing. I'm a big Sanchez guy. I'd rather see him and Saladino splitting SS and UTIL roles. But whatever. That's me. Think the last spot will go to Sands. Next in line will be Iwishukuma (or whatever his name is). And then Davidson if he is producing in AAA.
