Eh. He is off to an unsustainable start, and hasn't been very good for a number of years now. He hasn't had a positive defensive number for almost a decade. He'd be a marginal improvement, but the guy is still owed $22 million.

More than that, actually. He's under contract through 2018.

Still, if the Sox are competitive in July, he might be worth the gamble. With Jackson and Avi almost certainly both gone next year (and Melky the year after) and the Sox having nothing that attractive in the pipeline, they're going to need more outfielders.

What are you talking about? Last year he had a excellent year. 294 BA, 375 OBP and 39 doubles. How would you like that in the 2 hole? And his defensive is pretty good seeing he won the gold glove in 2014. And would fit right in out clubouse and wouldnt cost a arm and a leg like Cargo He would be well well above average in left field. We would improve the defense, 2 hole issue, OBP issue and wouldn't deplete the minors to do it.

Speaking of what are you talking about, you just disqualified anything else in your posts with this statement.

Why is that? Tell me one thing i said about Markakis and the White Sox that wasn't true?

He means Gold Gloves are worthless. Derek Jeter has 4 of them, that should say it all.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Apr 20, 2016 -> 06:14 PM)
And Cespedes won last year

Scratch that he actually has 5 of them. Even worse.

Then there's the year Palmero played about 30 games at 1b, rest at DH.... and won the GG for 1st.

Thanks for the assists.

Wow over 130,000 posts and nothing said. Il give you a old message board saying" read more- post less". Andyour the guy who wanted Ian Desmond. Ya nice call on that one. Maybe you should get your face out of the computer and don't go by the metrics and actually watch some baseball for a change. Il give you a tip, you can learn something. Just follow this for a second now, Markaikis > than Cabrera in left= YES. Cabrera > DH than Garcia = YES. Markakis > than anyone in our 2 hole= YES. Our OBP > with Markaikis than what we have now= YES. Markakis > in clubhouse than without= YES. Don't have to bleed our minor leagues to get him> compared to some of the others like Cargo= YES. GET THE PICTURE? I CAN DO IT IN ALL CAPS IF IT WILL HELP. And i never said Markakis is a defensive wizard just that he's al huge step up from Cabrera.

Out of all of that, Markakis might be an improvement over Garcia. The rest of it, not so much. The reason we wouldn't "bleed our minor leagues" is because he sucks and no one wants him for that contract. It was a mistake when it was signed, and is now a weight around his neck. If he was half as good as your eyes think he is, he'd be in demand. Instead is sitting on a team that is tanking and trading away every vet in sight. That should tell you something right there.

Here's another attempt from a Detroit writer at stirring up the trade market.

Moya is blocked now by Upton/JD Martinez, but they would be unlikely to help a division rival (the year of the Garcia trade, the White Sox were well out of it already)...and then how much do we trust someone from the Tigers with how Avi's panned out? They seemingly are making the better choices (Salty, JD Martinez, Iglesias) while their castoffs like Avila and Jackson (he's doing better than it looks statistically) are struggling.

Joey Gallo's an interesting name, if you like your hitters in the "all or nothing" Dunn/Thome/LaRoche camp. Seemingly blocked at multiple positions, value's down quite a bit.

Billy Hamilton...not sure I want to touch this one with a ten foot pole.

Danny Duffy...KC bullpen (see Moya, and he would be adding more to our overall left-handedness again)...don't see a match, unless Cooper really coveted him (plus KC might need to replace Young/Medlen, etc., at some point)

Matt Kemp...this name has been much discussed, depends upon the financials, similar to Hanley Ramirez in terms of status (how much would the Padres be willing to pay to get rid of him?) Like CarGo, can absolutely carry a team for 4-6 weeks but is the negative baggage worth it?

Another name would be Jurickson Profar...who also appears to be blocked in Texas, but they're going to wait it out and see if they can keep him at middle infield before they give up and move him to the outfield.

it's his fault there tanking? Yea right. No one said is was a good contract. Hell 70% of them are mistakes but if you think he sucks your crazy. I never said he was great but for the 2 hole which is our biggest weakness he is perfect. You don't want 40 doubles and a 370 OBP batting 2nd or do your metrics tell a different story. And if you don't think he is a wayyy better fielder than Cabrera your off your rocker. Not even close. IMO he is the easiest guy to get without giving up much. But OBP is something the Sox don't think is valuable but its going to kill this team before the seasons over.

CarGo is killing it right now. Idk if I want trade one of (or both) Anderson or Fulmer for him (maybe Anderson if Saladino was playing and hitting everyday).

Edit: actually I'd probably be open to dealing Fulmer if the Sox go pitching heavy with first 3 picks. Just not enough room in rotation for everyone.

I think the question is what are we willing to trade from the system to improve our team. Anderson, Fulmer, & Adams should be off limits IMO, unless it's in a package for a superstar with multiple years of control (unlikely mid-season). So now you're talking about packages built around secondary prospects like Michalczewski, May, Engel, Sanchez, Guerrero, Stephens, & Johnson. I'd hate going into our low A well, but that's also an option if we want to hold onto the big 3. Honestly, we got to hope the Sox decide to use their financial flexibility and take on the majority of a contract in exchange for a lower quality return. If they're willing to do that, we should be able to add an impact bat without gutting the top end of the system.

Todd Frazier cost Montas, Thompson, & Johnson. No way in hell CarGo costs two top 50 type prospects. Outside of a few select trades (Shelby Miller, Cole Hamel), teams simply aren't giving up high end prospects and definitely not without years of control or limited payroll obligations for the player being acquired.

It is his fault no one wants him when Atlanta would love to do nothing more than dump him like they did the rest of their vets.

I know stats are out of your league and all, but taking a five year sample of dWAR shows

Melky -3.8

Markaikis -4.9

The numbers show they are both bad in the OF, but Nick is clearly worse.

Don't forget the Giles and Kimbrel trades.

Philadelphia's sitting pretty right now in terms of young pitching.

Of course, the Devil's Advocate position is that there is no compelling reason for the Rockies to trade CarGo, either...not with Story doing so well and the team at least semi-competitive in the early going (Blackmon's apparently out, too). Colorado isn't hurting financially, and the focus has come off Jose Reyes and onto more positives for that franchise. They have the second best young 3B in the game (to Machado) in Nolan Arenado as well.

As for Cincy, the Reds will want to ride Bruce's positive start and hope if he can extend it for 2+ months that it will increase his trade value and they might not even end up having to eat anything on him or Phillips (who's also off to a solid start, but has no that no-trade clause).

Sox best option, IMO, for upgrading Avi (assuming he is playing poorly) is to either (i) eat a bad contract and not give up much in return; or (ii) fill the role internally.

Is Sands a fit for the DH role if Avi continues to underwhelm? Realistically, what could we expect from Sands over 162 games? Just curious...
