BigHurt3515
QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 21, 2016 -> 03:12 PM) I disagree swinging at first pitch is dumb when they've seen a lot of 83mph fastballs down the middle. Frazier swung at a 77 MPH cutter/slider thing that was out of the zone Edited April 21, 2016 by BigHurt3515
fathom
Jackson 2 for last 26 with one walk, no extra base hits. By all means, keep moving him up in the order. Edited April 21, 2016 by fathom
Dick Allen
QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Apr 21, 2016 -> 03:13 PM) Even if you get a meatball? Paulie's WS grand slam was on the first pitch. I am happy he was stupid enough to swing.
southsider2k5
QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Apr 21, 2016 -> 03:14 PM) They are all meatballs when it comes to Jeff Weaver. Um, not really, but OK.
cabiness42
On the first pitch, you should be looking for a specific pitch in a specific location, i.e. a fastball on the inner half. If you get what you're looking for, swing. If not, let it go. Once you have one strike you get a bit less selective and then with two strikes you get defensive. OmarComing25
QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Apr 21, 2016 -> 03:14 PM) They are all meatballs when it comes to Jeff Weaver. If you never swing at the first pitch pitchers will catch on and you'll start off every AB down 0-1. If you get a good pitch to hit swing away. BigHurt3515
QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 21, 2016 -> 03:15 PM) Jackson 2 for last 26 with one walk, no extra base hits. By all means, keep moving him up in the order. He has been hitting the ball hard and having a lot better ABs then Avila and Garcia so why should he be below them? Condor13
Frank Thomas needs to replace Steverson as hitting coach.
fathom
The goal against Weaver is to make him throw the ball over the plate. Swinging at the first pitch out of the zone is exactly what he wants the opposition to do.
daggins
I think its probably more a failure in scouting, although it doesn't seem like the coaches are doing much to bust the massive, teamwide slumps that have sunk this team the last 3 years. fathom
I wonder if we see Ishikawa called up for E. Johnson after this game. Really need a back-up 1B and a lefty bat on the bench. Edited April 21, 2016 by fathom

BaconOnAStick
If you never swing at the first pitch pitchers will catch on and you'll start off every AB down 0-1. If you get a good pitch to hit swing away. I'd rather they start 0-1 than just weakly pop something up into the OF while drawing absolutely no effort from the opposing pitcher. southsider2k5
Nice patience by Petricka not to rush the throw to second base after the bobble. That makes 4 DPs turned for the Sox today.

If no one is going to hit right now, you might as well stack the guys that are actually hitting Your idea is fine, just that the options are soooooooooooo bad. It shouldn't be this hard to find a DH that can hit decently vs RHP. Where's Calvin Pickering when you need him.
