Avi Needs to Go

DFA Sands, option Avi to AAA. Bring up Coats and Ishikawa. Coats in LF, Melky to DH, Ishikawa as LHH 1B/DH bench and PH role. Hope the option kicks Avi in the ass.

Come June, explore the trade market for better improvement than those two. But use the marginal improvement from those two in the short term.

Agreed. And seems simple enough to wonder why they haven't done it yet. With Coats too, he's 26. Sink or swim time for him and this is the perfect oppurtunity to find out what we have in him.

Avi is 8th in baseball at swinging at the first pitch.

What does this stat indicate though. Some of the players in the top ten actually lead their teams in BA. Avila, Abreu and Jackson have the lowest % on the Sox and they are all struggling.

2nd - out of zone swing%

8th - in zone swing%

3rd - total swing%

3rd - wiff%

Basically he's swinging at everything, this tends to happen when you have no clue what you're doing at the plate and guess on every pitch.

And on a semi-related note: Khris Davis has been unbelievably bad this year, his contact rates are significantly worse than any other qualified hitter. I know there was some mention of him in the offseason.

Ventura said there are no plans to send slumping DH Avi Garcia to minor leagues. #WhiteSox

At least the media asked the question. Last year it was a given he was going nowhere. Maybe Avi will wake up when he hears the discussion about his ineptitude at the plate.

After what I saw from Davis in the first series, I didn't want anything to do with him. Dude goes up there trying to jack everything out of the park. It's a terrible approach.

We are sitting him against a LHP so what are we doing tomorrow against a RHP? Throw him back out there?

We need to bring a lefty bat up who can actually hit RHP

We don't have one of those. The closest thing to that right now is Sanchez.

Every plate appearance is a waste.

How true. SOMETHING had better be in the works. Sending him down, trading him (I wouldn't care for what), releasing him. Something, anything....this can't go on!!

While there is no need to completely give up on him, he certainly does not deserve to be on the Big League squad. Send him to AAA and let him get his eye, mechanics and confidence back. There must be some left handed bat out there, who could at least get a hit and take a walk. What about Loney? He's playing on the Padres AAA team. The Sox should have taken him when he was released by the Rays, however it's not too late. We've discussed him before, but he's looking more appealing every day, given Avi's struggles. Loney also provides a back up first baseman.

I realize that he hasn't hit much in his brief appearance at El Paso, but he has only struck twice in 45 at bats, so he's probably hitting into some bad luck. He has also driven in 8 runs, so he has been productive. He has always been a good contact hitter, who doesn't strike out much, and he hits RHP very well. Career stats vs. RHP: 296 .351 .432

He would be better than Ishikawa, and should be available at very little cost. I'd settle for him, over the black hole that Avi represents, at this point.

Loney has family in San Diego. I don't think at this point he wants to leave the area. He must feel the Padres (who are deliberately tanking) are going to bring him up sooner or later.

I don't know what can be done with Garcia since Ventura said they won't send him down. The Sox dislike change throughout the organization even at the cost of wins but sooner or later, hopefully sooner, they'll realize this guy simply doesn't have it.

When they realize that is another question.

The Sox win again, so naturally we are talking about Avi.

Well, that is the topic of this thread. Perhaps those who have no interest in the topic, shouldn't waste their time reading it.

What do you think they should do with him? Does winning excuse every weakness, and should we all just conclude that since the Sox are 12 and 6, that they don't need to improve anything? Today's game didn't need to go extra innings. If Avi would contribute something, it would have been over in 9.

Avi is vying to replace La Roche as the League's worst DH. Excuse us, if some of us aren't content to overlook his pathetic at bats, simply because the Sox are winning.
