Early Trade Speculation

Look at the Mariners. Prior GM adds Cano and Cruz and do nothing. New GM works around the edges, fixes the defense and pen, and they're good again.

San Diego last year acquired all sorts of downside veterans, cleaning out the farm in the process. Board favs like Kimbrall, Kemp...can't go wrong. Well, they stunk.

Boston added Panda and Ramirez and they blew. Sat one, put the other at first, and used young players, and they contend again. They added Price, and he's stunk.

The Sox this year...the big differences are Lawrie and Jackson - fixing the defense and adding some incremental offensive improvement.

And yet the lust to trade everything for the "star" goes on unabated.

Trayce is a 4th outfielder. Not really gonna sweat that

I think he could be a regular but the Sox weren't going to give him time prove it anyway. Given that they already had a decent CF on the roster and a smoking crater at 3B it made complete sense at the time and makes even more sense after they added Jackson.

If someone wants to b**** about a trade Hahn has made it should be the Shark trade.

Trade everything? We gave up a relief pitcher, a second baseman who can't play defense and a guy who had one hot month in the majors.

Thompson probably wasn't on your radar until he got called up. Kid had a career minor league average of 240.....come on man.

How myopic, have you looked at Kemp, Cruz, Kimbrels, Canos numbers? Has it occurred to you maybe that the team around them, the crappy players they surrounded these players with underperformed, rather than the heroes themselves?

Not gonna argue panda and HanRam because those were very much panned deals when they happened and they turned out exactly how people thought, but then again the Red Sox signed these players they didn't trade for them

Keep banging that drum Greensox. One day it will make a sound

So you actually, seriously believe Todd Frazier isn't a big difference with this team?

Just so we all know, Kimbrel had 39 saves and a 2.58 era. Kemp hit 23 homers and drove in 100 runs. Both of these guys played on a team that won 74 games

Nelson Cruz hit 44 home runs and drove in 93 runs. Robinson Cano hit .287, 21 homers and drove in 79.

But yea, they stink. Stay away. Heroes

GreenSox, honestly, just stop making stuff up and trying to justify silly notions of hero worship. It's embarrassing and is a complete broken record at this point.

Rip the Swisher trade if you want. That'd be fair. But you're so blinded by this hero worship notion and antagonistic approach that you don't care bringing up the one that people would actually agree with.

The only thing these rents and heroes have done is given the team a 19-8 record. How dreadful. We could be watching low end prospects instead. Much better. They blew it not trading Eaton. The hero isn't as good as his numbers, and doesn't have the arm to play RF. a couple of mediocre prospects would have been such a better alternative but it's a clown show at 35th and Shields.

You're cherry picking in order to support your logic. It works both ways and there are countless examples of "star" players being added to a team which played major divideds... Most recent example, the Mets and Cespedes.

Another reason for your logic, I suspect... Is an unconscious attempt to distract from your flawed Frazier / Thompson assertions.

Call me when you'd like an appointment.

Yep. Stars never work. Jason Heyward has been bad. Max Scherzer too. Cespedes has also been a big disappointment.

But in all seriousness, Cespedes has been a monster so far. Still love Jackson, but wouldn't mind having him at DH in addition.

For another counterexample to Greinke/Price, there's Jordan Zimmerman's much more reasonable contract with the Tigers, comparatively.

Now whether he's a "hero" or not, he's pretty close. I know a lot of people would have been excited at having the best rotation in the majors were they to have made that signing, although it would have been a total shocker since we were all so focused on that big hitter...and that was with the assumption for MOST OF THE OFFSEASON that Erik Johnson and Danks were going to be "fine/okay" at the back end of the rotation.

Obviously, circumstances change.

I'd really like to see the Sox add another arm. Do you think Anderson + more could get Sonny Gray?

No. Sox would get outid for Sonny Gray. Cubs or Dodgers could land him. The Sox don't need an ace though. Just a solid #4 starter.

No.

He's just a counterpoint to the "everything is sunshine, unicorns and pots of gold at the end of the rainbow" perspective.

Somewhere in the middle lies the truth.

Because of financial limitations on payroll, we can't sign very many heroes. Luckily for the Sox, the majority of those hero contracts are bad ones for the clubs to engage in, so it actually works to the advantage of the organization, except perhaps in terms of the perception of the team by fans when none of the big names sign with us.

That causes Sox fans to be a bit skeptical about how long or how well this streak of great play will continue...(see 2012.) If that great play had a foundation of Jordan Zimmerman, Jason Heyward or Miguel Cabrera instead of Brett Lawrie, Austin Jackson and Mat Latos, then it would presumably be easier for fans to embrace whole-heartedly because of the prevailing perception once again that stars or heroes get you to the postseason and win games there (see Yoenis Cespedes).

And then every time the Sox trade for these so-called heroes (long list of trades and signings), most of them have gone against us since that 2007/08 class of Danks/Ramirez/Quentin/Floyd.

In all honesty, they don't have much to trade for a bat either...unless they're willing to trade one of the top 3.

It means we're going to be more in 2012 mode of finding the right veteran where we're assuming financial obligations without parting with so much talent.

There's just no way we could afford to wipe out our entire farm system for Gray. Luckily, there's still a lot more potentially available bats on the market...with supply exceeding current demand, that should work in Hahn's favor if he makes a move in June or early July instead of waiting. Of course, that also means paying out more money by a factor of 1/5th or 1/6th contractually.

We also have cash to work with, which is very valuable this year as certain teams are likely to blow through their international spending caps with an international draft potentially around the corner.

And, with the current trend the White Sox are on....you'd think they are more likely to revert to the old KW way of thinking...that money needs to be spent NOW to address needs at the major league level rather than spending millions on lottery tickets that have about a 1/50 or 2 in 75 chance of returning you a future superstar.

Sox could definitely acquire a hitter like Beltran, Bruce, or Reddick at the deadline. A pitcher is possible too. They don't need an ace that would cost a haul. I'd look for a back end innings eater if Turner/Johnson can't do the job. I'd also be in the market for a power reliever from the LH side. Duke has been fine but if they had a LH setup man that throws hard to go with Robertson and Jones, they'd be in business.

Is it wrong to want Nelson Cruz as our DH? :o

No. It's not wrong at all. I'd rather have a lefty but it'd be a big improvement. Mark Shapiro and the Blue Jays could load up as well if they decided to sell off parts.
