Since LaRoche money puts us in better position to take on a contract thus paying less in minor league talent, would anyone consider James Shields? He is due about 60 million over the next 3 years, 34 years old , 9 consecutive seasons of 200+ innings and has playoff experience. He would possibly be a 3-4 pitcher allowing Latos to become your 5 which works if you think he is due for regression etc. This team seems to be winning on pitching and defense. Prior to LaRoche retiring, we couldn't add payroll and no way SD would pay all of his money but now maybe we wouldn't have to give as much talent if we took on 10 million a year(SD pays at least half what he is owed on total contract). As he ages, he would slide down the starter slot from a #3 to #5 as younger guys move into the rotation.

San Diego would love to get rid of him, but man, his stuff is diminishing rapidly. In two years we'd be talking about him like we talk about John Danks now.

Shields would work short term but I just can't help but think Sox will only use internal options to ride the 5th spot out. I hope the yankees keep sucking and sell at the deadline. Texeira would be a nice pick up, FA after this year, owed alot of money but Sox can split it with the Yanks and give up a C prospect.

I'd love if the Sox added Lincecum

This has White Sox dumpster diving signing written all over it.

I still like Cashner from SD. If you take Kemp or Melvin Jr (plus $), it probably wouldn't cost you much prospect wise. The #5 pitcher is concerning to me, not because Danks sucks but because of expected regression from Latos and Rodon is good but still young.

It would nice to see Texas or Anaheim really take it to the AL West. I'd gladly give up Anderson for Gray and/or Felix (probably cost more than just Anderson for Gray).

I wouldn't touch Felix with a 50-foot pole.

That was a bad contract the day that it was signed.

I wonder who we could realistically look to take on without giving up much. I know he's hurt, but maybe Ethier? We pay most of his salary this year (possible with LaRoche money freed up) and Dodgers pay most next year?

Edit: just checked the stats of their outfielders. Pederson and Thompson are only ones hitting so they may get use out of him at some point.

Just doesn't make sense to take on a pitcher with that amount of wear and tear with 3 more years remaining on that contract.

If they had it do all over again, Maeda or perhaps Iwakuma would have been the moves. We need all the marketing help we can get, so adding a Japanese pitcher would have added another revenue stream. Granted, the track record with those guys hasn't been so great, going back to Irabu, Dice K and Igawa, to name a few. Darvish settled in as perhaps the best of the bench and then he got injured. Roll of the dice.

Seems the next "niche" market will be Korea with the success of a group of hitters now over the last season plus.

Japanese pitchers are way more abused than American ones are.

Which is why they typically end up as relievers in the US.

At any rate, with Maeda, Tanaka and Darvish, we'll have another test group of three front-line starters/aces to study and see how they respond to injury set-backs. Iwakuma and Chen (Taiwan) have more than held their own.

We also don't have nearly as much research about Japanese pitchers going through TJ surgery in the US, compared to the US-born and Latin American pitchers.

Okay, so what are you willing to give up for Rasmus?

If it's going to cost Adams + _________ (someone else between 6-15 in the system), do you still do it?

There are a lot of names out there still, but most of those longer-term contracts will involve even more complicated contractual considerations or possibly another three-way trade.

They'll give you Carlos Gomez for free right now, do you take that chance? Don't answer, Hawk.

What about Marisnick, Tucker or Singleton?
