bmags
I feel like if we were actually able to study police violence we'd end up with a lot of quick wins around scheduling and process that could dramatically reduce things without even tackling the more difficult training out prejudice issues. But, good luck with that. We'll get more blue lives matter laws.
Y2HH
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 02:53 PM) I am just as angered as Greg. I can't stop thinking about this today. I was literally shaken to the core last night when this exploded on twitter. See, while I've only met you once, I believe you when you say this. That and by your record of posting here over the years...I believe this shook you. You also rarely tend to express it...Greg on the other hand seems to get outraged at any and every opportunity...for things far less serious than this. I saw this news and...nothing but a fleeting moment of sadness, because I know it'll just be a few days or weeks before it or some other atrocity happens and replaces it...it would be a never ending pit of sadness and anger. Perhaps that's why I've stopped letting it bother me over the years.

greg775
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 11:55 AM) Shoot someone in the leg while they're in a car? Greg is really the king of trolls. The man was shot five times in the car. He did nothing wrong. If you think he can't shoot once (which would have been too many times) and not shoot to kill when the man is doing nothing than I'd say you are a troll. The guy has a kid in the car. he's doing nothing wrong. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 02:12 PM) You guys are white. It must be lovely to be able to tell a cop this and not get blown away. One of the best posts ever. I feel for you. You are at the discretion of these cops making a quick decision deciding whether or not to kill you. I feel for you pettie. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 02:44 PM) By no means am I exonerating police everywhere, but the idea that this is "America" is f***ing absurd. What the is, is media reporting on nothing but bad things, because they know it sells. Violence sells. Turning people on one another sells. There is much more good going on in America than bad, and I don't need "statistics on police shootings" to know that. Why so defensive. This is America sad to say. Two murders of black men who were doing nothing wrong. Executions. And they are not yet charged with murder? QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 02:48 PM) People murdering other people is an issue that will be here until the end of days. It's not irrelevant and people aren't really saying it is. When you have representatives of the government slaughtering their citizens, it's a big f***ing deal. We pay cops to protect and serve. A busted tail light ending with a murder of a citizen is atrocious. Start f***ing charging these cops and convicting them FFS. Amen. It's a huge deal. this is pure slaughter and many people are numb to it. Nobody even checked for a pulse on the man they butchered and shot five times. I mean total disregard of human life. That cop should be in jail held without bond. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 03:01 PM) If you could live a day in black man's shoes, you might have a different perspective. I always feel like I have emasculate myself so that I don't scare the s*** of white people. This is exhausting but it is what it is. You probably don't get people clutching their purses when you get within a certain vicinity of them. You don't have people see you as a dangerous human being even though you'd never hurt a fly. I never understood this irrational fear of color of somebody's skin. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 04:01 PM) What ever happened to that military grade mace? Yes. I should stop talking about tazing and turn to mace. If a cop just HAS to attack an innocent person, why not a simple shot of pepper spray to the face then tackle him. At least it's not a sentence of death. Five bullets to the passenger? And the officer is not charged with cold blooded murder yet? Sorry officer. You f***ed up. You shot an innocent man five times. You sir are going to jail for the rest of your life. If that cop is not convicted of murder, I think America officially has jumped the shark and it will be all downhill from here. No possible reason for that cold blooded killer to ever leave a prison cell again. Solitary please for the rest of his life. I can't believe how f***ing reckless that guy was. "f***, f***, f***, I TOLD HIM NOT TO MOVE! I TOLD HIM NOT TO MOVE!" amateur That's what I thought too about the child. Are these cops not trained? What about that situation screamed, "I better shoot this guy five times." Then, "I better treat the other people in that car like criminals. I better make sure that little girl doesn't see her mom for 10 hours by god. I better not feed them or give them water at the police station." WTF America? Was an ambulance even called? I hope he rots in jail but based on history, he'll walk. Great question. The victim was moaning in the front seat. I think it was caught on tape the moment he died cause the girlfriend commented when he gasped then was silent. The cop had his gun pointed in the car while the man was moaning. I mean I'm very surprised he didn't just finish him off with more bullets. He sure was ready to shoot again. Every cop on the scene should be fired and several should be charged. No ambulance. No nothing, but either committing murder or watching murder be committed. Edited July 7, 2016 by greg775

caulfield12
I never understood this irrational fear of color of somebody's skin. Greg, now you've done it...remember your Subway LGBT/bathroom comments? How is there any difference between irrational fear of an African-American or Mexican-American and someone who's LGBT making you feel uncomfortable? How can one be rational and the other not? (Unless you want to argue the whole nature vs. nurture, it's a decision or choice to be LGBT, but who would deliberately choose that with all the prejudice they would face in life?) As far as Mexico vs. the US. I lived in Colombia for one year, and I can honestly say I never felt in danger, but that's because I was (treated as) a tourist (while working there) even though I saw military/police with guns all over the country and a sicario/motorcycle assassin take someone out about 100 yards from where I was eating dinner once. My idea was that I might be robbed/drugged (this happened once, in the wrong bar by myself, too overconfident of my security), but I never ever felt I would be murdered, because it would bring down too much heat on the country's tourism industry. On the other hand, I grew up in Iowa and I couldn't imagine a safer environment for kids...maybe 1-2 murders, at most, in our city of roughly 30,000 per year. That said, we also knew in Davenport, Rock Island and East Moline it was a big more dangerous than the suburbs. So part of it's location in the city, definitely (as those who live/work in Chicago can attest). Personally, I feel Thailand is much more dangerous for foreigners than either Mexico or the US, but that also depends on whether you're a tourst or a long-term resident/work permit holder and know your way around, what to do and not to do, don't get drunk or pick fights that always end up with 4-6 Thais against one foreigner/farang. So I get the point about Mexico...I felt the same way around rural areas of Colombia, some of the most beautiful scenery in the world and a place I could easily envision retiring if not for issues with accessibility of quality health care, internet speeds and government stability (or lack thereof). In fact, the places we perceive to be more dangerous (like Colombia) are often less so than many Central American countries like Honduras, Costa Rica, etc. But always know your surroundings. I remember being in Mexico (Nuevo Laredo) over New Year's once and we couldn't go outside because you very well MIGHT get hit by a stray bullet that was fired into the air in celebration coming back down to earth, lol. Both posters are right, in their own perceptions....and both are wrong to believe there are absolute rights and wrongs for everyone, or a "generally right" answer that will please everyone, equally. Caulfield, I wasn't afraid or wanting to physically harm the transgender wearing the dress and heels and stumbling into the Subway. I was trying to be nice on this message board by not saying how I truly felt -- that is, I was losing my appetite looking at her. Am I a sinner for this mental atrocity? Yes. I am not perfect. But at least I'm admitting the sight of her was not pleasing to my eyes. Should I be a better person than that? Sure. I guess I could have sat with the transgendered person at dinner and tried to force myself to not be so dismayed by her appearance, but on that day, my faults as a human being surfaced. Maybe she thinks I'm a gross, ugly MF. She has that right. I've never had a problem with being around African Americans even though at Brother Rice I think we had maybe less than five total black students when I was there. All recruited athletes I think. Brian
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 7, 2016 -> 02:13 PM) I mean, we are hiring a lot of under educated people (by some measure), throwing them out into the field with the utmost authority and deadly weapons, thats not a great formula. I have a few buddys from high school that couldn't make it in college and went into the police force. I don't think they're dumb or anything but see what you mean. Law enforcement shouldn't be a backup profession when someone can't cut it in high school or college.
